And don't miss R.J. Palacio's highly anticipated new novel, Pony, available now!
I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.
August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. Beginning from Auggie’s point of view and expanding to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others, the perspectives converge to form a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope.
R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

The Wall Street Journal:
"What makes R.J. Palacio's debut novel so remarkable, and so lovely, is the uncommon generosity with which she tells Auggie's story…The result is a beautiful, funny and sometimes sob-making story of quiet transformation.”
The Huffington Post:
"It's in the bigger themes that Palacio's writing shines. This book is a glorious exploration of the nature of friendship, tenacity, fear, and most importantly, kindness."
"Full of heart, full of truth, Wonder is a book about seeing the beauty that's all around us. I dare you not to fall in love with Auggie Pullman."

"A beautiful story of kindness and courage. There are many real and well-developed characters, and they each have their shining moments. Of course, Auggie shines the brightest." - Clare Vanderpool, Newbery award-winning author of Moon Over Manifest
"Wonder is a beautifully told story about heartache, love, and the value of human life. One comes away from it wanting to be a better person." - Patricia Reilly Giff, two-time Newbery honor-winning author of Lily's Crossing and Pictures of Hollis Woods

I'm totally in love with this novel." - Trudy Ludwig, anti-bullying advocate and author of My Secret Bully, Confessions of a Former Bully, Better Than You, and Just Kidding
Starred Review, Publishers Weekly:
“Few first novels pack more of a punch: it's a rare story with the power to open eyes--and hearts--to what it's like to be singled out for a difference you can't control, when all you want is to be just another face in the crowd.”
Starred Review, Booklist:
“Palacio makes it feel not only effortless but downright graceful, and by the stand-up-and-cheer conclusion, readers will be doing just that, and feeling as if they are part of this troubled but ultimately warm-hearted community.”
Starred Review, School Library Journal:
"Palacio has an exceptional knack for writing realistic conversation and describing the thoughts and emotions of the characters...A well-written, thought-provoking book."

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024So much that can be taught and learned from this book. Auggie knew he was different, and he had been so protected. Through love and worry, his family sends him out into a world that makes him learn even more. He has the typical stress of being a small 5th grader, new to the school, and way out of the norm. But he embraces it and finds amazing friends along the way.
Summer, what an amazing young woman. Truly a character to be reckoned with and looked up to. She isn't in the world just to get ahead. She is one that will strengthen anyone around her. Jack probably learned and grew the most. What a kid to realize what he needed to do and become. And where real friends can be found.
I would recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2025I loved reading this book. Let’s all just be a little more kinder each day to others. Much better than the movie!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017Loved it!!!I think this quote from the book sums up this book very well
"Everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their life because we all overcometh the world"
I would like to give this book a standing ovation. It is wonderfully written and full of messages about being kind. It is a children's book but one that is loved by adults for it's message.
Ten year old "Auggie" was born with a facial deformity and was home schooled until he begins school in the Fifth grade at his Mother's gentle urging. Throughout the book we are told the shocking and cruel reactions people have to seeing Auggie's face. It is understandable why Halloween is his favorite Holiday and why he wore the helmet for so long. It also shows how this effects him, his self esteem and how he views himself. It is no wonder that he is anxious about beginning school. This is a big change for him, but he is not the only one who encounters change when he begins school. WE see how both he and his peers adjust to him attending school. We see how children, like adults, can be both cruel and kind. I loved Auggie's gentle strength, sense of humor and courage. Throughout this book, I rooted for Auggie but I also rooted for the other characters as well. One part that stood out for me was when his father told him that he loved his face. It was a beautiful conversation.
This book is told from various character's POV. This really worked for me. I especially liked his sister's POV chapters.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2024A short, sweet and simple story. Loved breezing through it at bedtime. I really enjoyed reading through perspectives of different kids. The ending speech about kindness and greatness is something to remember and revisit. Would recommend to anyone looking for a light reading with a good message and good vibes.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2017I have read a limited number of books that I really reflected on, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, being one of them. It is not a book that you read through and then forget about. It is the type of book that sits in the back of your head and appears every single time a relatable event occurs. Maybe that is why this book is so well-known; every reader can connect to it.
Wonder is a book about Auggie Pullman, a 5th grader facing challenges with his face abnormality. The school where Auggie Pullman attends has lots of cliques and drama. With it being his first year going to school it is already confusing, his face just adds to this. He has trouble overcoming the stares and gossip and gaining an understanding of the school. His classmates and friends also struggle understanding Auggie and the life he lives being different.
I really enjoyed this book because it offered many different perspective of events. It brought attention to the struggles of being different and how much a little action can mean to someone. It was very well written and realistic, humorous and serious at times. It was detailed but fairly easy to understand. The themes of friendship, kindness and courage are strong in this story, I think everyone can learn something from the characters in Wonder.
Overall, I was really touched by the world of Auggie Pullman and the people around him. I would highly suggest reading this book to people of all ages!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2017So, I waffled about whether or not to read this book for years- literally. I have this hang up about reading what I consider children’s books…. I still do of coarse, but it takes longer for me to convince myself it’s okay. I am, after all, an adult. I feel like I should be reading larger books, or at the very least books with a more grueling vocabulary. The truth of the matter, though, is that there are a ton of books for young readers out there now that weren’t out when I was a kid- or I never knew about them. Why should I miss out just because I’m old?
Then, of course, there are books that should have no age restrictions. Books where the message is so necessary to everyday life and development that it ought to be required reading for all. Wonder is one of those books. Following Auggie through his days, and then the other narrators, I was quickly reminded how much just a little kindness and understanding can mean…. and how often it can be lacking these days. We live in a world of anger, bullying, hurt and hatred; and we need a bit of softness… a little kindness. I loved the characters so much. I cried for them, and celebrated accomplishments. This was just so beautifully written, I couldn’t put it down. I want to be more like Summer, who fist came up to Auggie out of kindness but was able to see him- the nice and funny kid that’s just awesome. I liked that she didn’t allow what other’s thought to sway her as to whom to hang out with- this is a big thing in middle school when peer pressure abounds and everyone wants to be accepted. She showed a kindness and loyalty that I admire. For me, this is a five star book plus one for creativity.
On the adult content scale, there is some very minor language and miniscule violence. It barely registers as a one really.
The book is has been out for ages. I want to get it for basically every kid I know and add the journal as well.
