Guide for new players - RSC Wiki | RuneScape Classic (2025)

After Tutorial Island, new players begin in the town of Lumbridge. This is a safe area, but areas outside of Lumbridge contain more aggressive monsters, which pose a serious threat in RuneScape Classic. It is advisable to stock up on food sources and combat levels, and be wary of Highwaymen, White wolves, Darkwizards, Muggers, and Scorpions. Remember to always carry a sleeping bag with you, and a food source when traveling outside of towns.

Early money making[edit | edit source]

There are several quests that can be easily completed early for their monetary rewards, including Black knight's fortress, Sheep Herder (warning: potentially frustrating), Pirate's treasure, Ernest the chicken, The Hazeel Cult, Monk's friend, Prince Ali rescue, and Shield of Arrav. These have no level requirements and should net you nearly 10000 coins with which to buy starter equipment.

When you have a low Hits level, you can thieve Men around Lumbridge, and easily return to pick up your items when they kill you. There is no bank at Lumbridge, the nearest one is in Draynor Village.

Early combat training[edit | edit source]

It is not advisable to complete quests for their experience rewards at low levels since their reward scales with your current level. At first, kill chickens or gnome troops rather than any higher level monster for efficient experience. Chickens are located closer to the starting area, and drop feathers, which you will find useful later, or can sell to players. Cook chicken meat for food on fires, to gain Cooking, Woodcutting, and Firemaking experience.

Move on to killing cows for their hides, and tan them in Al Kharid. This can serve as early Crafting experience as well as a source of money if you sell leather bodies to a shop.

Memorize where various shops are located, including Gaius' Two Handed Sword Shop (which you will need to buy your first starter weapon), Peksa's Helmet Shop, Horvik's Armour Shop, and Louie Legs. Armour can be converted at Thrander for female characters.

Crafting amulets has many requirements, so it may be advisable to complete Imp Catcher early in order to obtain a good amulet.

Early skilling[edit | edit source]

Shrimp can be fished south of Draynor Village, and there are nearby trees to make fires on which they can be cooked. The Varrock southeast mine is also useful at low levels.

It is advisable to steal cake from the Bakers Stall in East Ardougne - this will get you some early Thieving experience and a valuable source food for healing.

If you lose your tools, you can purchase woodcutting equipment at Bob's Axes or find an axe upstairs near Cassie in Falador. A Bronze Pickaxe can be found in Rimmington (higher tiers of pickaxe only reduce clicks, so it is up to you to pursue them or not).

A net can be purchased at Gerrant's Fishing Supplies. Everything else is available in General Stores throughout towns in RuneScape Classic.

Travel[edit | edit source]

Crossing White Wolf Mountain to reach the western half of the continent is a perilous task for many low level players due to the aggressive white wolves. It is easier to cross by taking a ship from Port Sarim to Karamja, and then from Brimhaven to East Ardougne. Be warned of the aggressive scorpions on the Karamja volcano (although they are significantly lower level and easier to avoid than the wolves).

In the long term, complete Fishing contest to get a safer and faster crossing under the mountain.

Complete Plague City for access to West Ardougne, and complete Gertrude's Cat in order to trade Cats for Death-Runes there. Access to the area is also useful because food can be purchased from Chadwell.

Early goals[edit | edit source]

An early goal is to gain access to the Champions' Guild to purchase rune equipment.

Magic is expensive to train and will require some starter coins. Buy runes at Aubury's Rune Shop, and aim to purchase a fire or air elemental staff at Zaff's staff shop to save money.

Once you have some combat stats and a good source of healing, complete Tree Gnome Village to gain access to Spirit Trees for teleportation. Law-Runes are rare and valuable, so the spirit trees are highly convenient.

Frequently asked questions[edit | edit source]

  • There are lots of typos in NPC dialogue. Is this a bug?
    • There are lots of typos. RuneScape Classic was probably developed without a spell checker. The Internet was a different place in 2001, and people were less concerned with such things. The number of typos depends on the developer who wrote the quest's RuneScript.
  • Walking is slow. How do I get around faster?
    • While there is only one movement speed, key areas are less far apart than they are in later versions of RuneScape, and the walking feels natural when you are used to it. It is a good idea to make yourself familiar with ships, spirit trees and other shortcuts.
  • Which combat builds are good?
    • Many players choose to prioritize Strength. It is recommended to use weapons with the highest WeaponPower available. See pure (usually referring to an account without magic), mage tank, etc.
  • The camera is strange. Is there a way to make it not strange?
    • The default camera behaviour is made for play with only a mouse (no keyboard arrow keys for camera movement). Change it from "auto" to "manual" in the spanner options menu in-game.
