The Christian doctrine of the Holy Spirit arises out of the experience of the Church, as it Interprets, and is itself interpreted by, the promise of the Comforter given by Jesus to His disciples (Joh 14; 15; 16). This appeal to experience follows the method adopted by St. Peter in his Pentecostal sermon (Ac 2:33). The teaching may briefly be stated as follows: The Holy Spirit is God; a Person within the Godhead; the Third Person, the knowledge of whom depends on the revelation of the Father and the Son, from both of whom He proceeds. He was in the world, and spoke by the prophets before the Word became flesh, and was Himself the agent in that creative act. Through Him the atonement was consummated. He is the life-giving presence within the universal Church, the Divine agent in its sacramental and authoritative acts; communicating Himself as a presence and power to the individual Christian; mediating to him forgiveness and new birth; nourishing, increasing, and purifying his whole personality; knitting him into the fellowship of saints; and finally, through the resurrection of the body, bringing him to the fulness of eternal life. The purpose of this article is to justify this teaching from Scripture.

As then through one trespass all men have come under condemnation, so through one act of righteousness all obtain the gift of righteousness unto life. For as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of the one man will the many be made righteous. Moreover the law came in in addition, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded much more; that as sin reigned in death, so grace might reign through righteousness to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the good of others. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; read more. to another faith, by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing, by the one Spirit;

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or freemen; and were all made to drink one Spirit.
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or freemen; and were all made to drink one Spirit. For the body also is not one member, but many. read more. If the foot say, Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body, is it for this reason not of the body? And if the ear say, Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body, is it for this reason not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? But as it is, God set the members every one of them in the body, as it pleased him. And if they were all one member, where would be the body? But now there are, indeed, many members, but one body.
while our seemly parts have no need. But God so put the body together, as to give special honor to that part which lacked,
God appointed some in the church to be, in the first place, apostles, in the second place, prophets, in the third place, teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, those of helping and of governing, divers kinds of tongues. Are all apostles?

But desire earnestly the greater gifts. And furthermore I show you by far the most excellent way.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing.
And now there abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Strive to possess love; and desire earnestly the spiritual gifts, but especially that of prophesying.
Strive to possess love; and desire earnestly the spiritual gifts, but especially that of prophesying.
Strive to possess love; and desire earnestly the spiritual gifts, but especially that of prophesying. For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not to men, but to God; for no one heareth; but in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries; read more. but he that prophesieth speaketh to men edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied; for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, unless he interpret, that the church may receive edification. But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by teaching? And even things without life that give sound, whether pipe or harp, if they make no distinction in the sounds, how shall that be known which is piped or harped? For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for the battle? So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall that be known which is spoken? For ye will be speaking into the air. There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and not one is without meaning. If then I know not the meaning of the language, I shall be to him that speaketh a foreigner, and he that speaketh a foreigner to me. So also ye, since ye are eager to possess spiritual gifts, be earnest to abound in them to the edification of the church.
So also ye, since ye are eager to possess spiritual gifts, be earnest to abound in them to the edification of the church. Wherefore let him that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue pray that he may interpret. read more. For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. How stands it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else, if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, since he understandeth not what thou art saying? For thou indeed givest thanks well; but the other is not edified. I thank God, I speak in an [unknown] tongue more than ye all; yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might also instruct others, than ten thousand words in an [unknown] tongue.
And spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
seeing that in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the partaking of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

But when Cephas came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face; for he was condemned. For before certain persons came from James, he used to eat with the gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew, and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
We are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the gentiles;

Behold, I Paul say to you, that if ye are circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing;
For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
and put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church,

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye were called in one hope of your calling;
But to each one of us was given the grace [which he hath] according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Wherefore God also highly exalted him, and gave him a name which is above every name; that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father.

This charge I commit to thee, my child Timothy, in accordance with the directions of the prophets before given to thee, that thou mayst in them war the good warfare,

Is any sick among you? let him call to him the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up; even if he have committed sins, it shall be forgiven him.
In like manner, ye younger men, submit yourselves to the elder; and all of you be clothed with humility toward each other; for "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble."
knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture cometh from private interpretation. For prophecy never came by the will of man; but moved by the Holy Spirit, men spoke from God.

To him that loveth us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and made us a kingdom, priests to God his Father, to him be the glory and the dominion for ever. Amen. Behold, he cometh with the clouds, and every eye shall see him, and they who pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. I am the Alpha and the Omega, saith the Lord God, he who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. I John, your brother, and companion in the affliction and kingdom and endurance in Jesus, was in the isle that is called Patmos, on account of the word of God, and the testimony of Jesus. I was in the Spirit on the Lords day; and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, saying: What thou seest, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches; to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamus, and to Thyatira, and to Sardes, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea. And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me; and having turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks, and in the midst of the candlesticks one like to a son of man, clothed with a garment reaching down to the feet, and girded at the breasts with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white as white wool, as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet were like fine brass, as if burning in a furnace; and his voice was as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars; and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword; and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead; and he laid his right hand on me, saying, Fear not; I am the first and the last,
And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead; and he laid his right hand on me, saying, Fear not; I am the first and the last, and he that liveth; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore; and I have the keys of death and the underworld.
And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God:
And I fell at his feet to worship him; and he saith to me, See thou do it not; I am a fellowservant of thee, and of thy brethren who maintain the testimony to Jesus; worship God. For the testimony to Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he saith, Write; for these words are faithful and true. And he said to me, All things are accomplished. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To him that thirsteth I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely.
And he showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, coming out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
