1. The prophet who with Ahijah encouraged the revolution of the ten tribes from Jeroboam. In Massoretic Text he appears after the revolution has begun (1Ki 12:22-24; 2Ch 11:2-4). In the second Septuagint account, however, he appears at the beginning, at the assembly in Shechem (1Ki 12:24). He is mentioned further in 2Ch 12:5-8, and his history in 2Ch 12:16. 2. Son of Shecaniah, descendant of Zerubbabel (1Ch 3:22). 3. Son of Shecaniah, 'keeper of the east gate,' and assistant to Nehemiah in repairing the wall (Ne 3:29). 4. Jeremiah predicted the complete cutting off of his family. 27. Father of Delaiah, who was a prince in the reign of Zedekiah (Jer 36:12). 28. 'The great,' kinsman of Tobias (Tob 5:13). In several cases two of these may be the same individual. The identification has the most probability in reference to 2 and 3, 8 and 9, and 12 and 13.

But a message from God came to Shemaiah, a man of God: "Tell Solomon's son Rehoboam, king of Judah, all the dynasty of Judah, Benjamin, and the rest of the people, read more. Shecaniah's son was Shemaiah, and the six sons of Shemaiah were Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat.

Nethanel's son Shemaiah, a Levitical scribe, made an official record of them for the king, the officers, Zadok the priest, Abiathar's son Ahimelech, and the heads of ancestral households of both the priests and the descendants of Levi. One ancestral house was chosen for Eleazar and one for Ithamar.

Later, Rehoboam died, as had his ancestors, and his son Abijah became king to replace him.
They were accompanied by the descendants of Levi, including Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah. These descendants of Levi were accompanied by the priests Elishama and Jehoram.

There was also a man named Uriah, Shemaiah's son from Kiriath-jearim, who prophesied in the LORD's name. He prophesied about this city and this land in words similar to those of Jeremiah.
"You are to say to Shemaiah of Nehelam: "This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says: "Because you sent letters in your own name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, to Maaseiah's son Zephaniah the priest and to all the priests read more. The LORD made you a priest instead of Jehoiada the priest to serve in the LORD's Temple as an official against every crazy prophet, and to put him in stocks and restraints. And now, why didn't you rebuke Jeremiah from Anathoth who prophesies to you? So he sent a message to us in Babylon: "The exile will be long, so build houses and live in them. Plant gardens and eat their produce.'"'" Then Zephaniah the priest read this letter to Jeremiah the prophet, and this message from the LORD came to Jeremiah: "Send a message to all the exiles: "This is what the LORD says about Shemaiah from Nehelam, "Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I didn't send him, and has made you trust a lie," therefore, this is what the LORD says: "I'm about to judge Shemaiah from Nehelam along with his descendants. He won't have anyone related to him living among these people. Nor will he see the good that I'll do for my people," declares the LORD, "because he advocated rebellion against the LORD."'"
he went down to the palace, to the scribe's office, where all the officials were sitting. Elishama the scribe, Shemaiah's son Delaiah, Achbor's son Elnathan, Shaphan's son Gemariah, Hananiah's son Zedekiah, and all the other officials were there.
