2 more level crossings to go on the Sunbury Line
Old Calder Highway, Diggers Rest
We are making the Sunbury Line level crossing-free by 2026
The Victorian Government is committed to removing every level crossing on the Sunbury Line by 2026 – meaning more benefits for local communities and a better transport network for all Victorians.
We're removing 7 level crossings on the Sunbury Line. With the Gap Road level crossing removed in September this year, 4 level crossings are already gone, 1 is going and now we have added another 2 including:
- Old Calder Highway, Diggers Rest
- Watsons Road, Diggers Rest
Removing these crossings will improve safety, allow more trains more often and will prepare the area for future development.
Better transport, less congestion
Making the Sunbury Line level crossing-free will change how locals live, work and travel.
With no level crossings on the train line, journeys will be faster and more reliable, and local roads will be safer.
Removing these level crossings now will prevent even longer boom gate down time in the future.
Building on the Metro Tunnel
The Metro Tunnel will mean more trains more often along the Sunbury Line. We're removing these crossings now to avoid even more boom gate down time and more congestion on local roads.
Trains will be able to get from Sunbury to Pakenham and Cranbourne via the Metro Tunnel without a single boom gate going down.
The Metro Tunnel will also give Sunbury Line passengers direct access to 5 new inner city stations, with connections to the City Loop.
The Sunbury Line will also connect to the Melbourne Airport Rail at Sunshine Station.
Why these crossings need to go
- Approximately 6300 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
- Boom gates are down for up to 36 minutes of the morning peak (7am to 9am)
- Up to 27 trains during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
Crossings removed
- Furlong Road, St Albans
- Main Road, St Albans
- Melton Highway, Sydenham
- Gap Road, Sunbury
Underway
- Calder Park Drive, Calder Park
- Holden Road, Calder Park (closure)
Watsons Road, Diggers Rest

Next steps
You'll hear more from our teams in the coming months about the removal of these crossings.
This will include information on how to get involved, project timelines and what early investigations will be happening in your area.
Project benefits
- The Sunbury Line will be level crossing-free by 2026
- Eases congestion and improves safety
- Builds on the Metro Tunnel which will allow more trains to run more often
- Prevents even longer boom gate down time in the future
The best designs
At Old Calder Highway and Watsons Road in Diggers Rest, new road bridges over the rail line will deliver the best outcome for the community.
At Old Calder Highway, the new road bridge will be moved towards the south, while at Watsons Road the new road bridge will cross the train line in the same location.
The road bridges will:
- create better connections for people travelling around Diggers Rest and to the Calder Freeway
- future proof for future growth and development in the area.
We are in the early stages of project design. Further detailed design, engineering assessments and community engagement will be undertaken on these projects.
