Joe Thornton Reportedly Re-Signs with Sharks on 1-Year Contract
July 1, 2017Potential future Hall of Famer Joe Thornton is staying with the San Jose Sharks.
Thornton re-signed with San Jose on a one-year deal on Saturday, according to Kevin Kurz of NBC Sports California.
Thornton played for the Boston Bruins from the 1997-98 season to 2005, when the center was traded to the Sharks. The six-time All-Star won the Hart Memorial Trophy (league MVP) and Art Ross Trophy (league's top point scorer) in 2005-06 but is coming off something of a drop-off in 2016-17.
He tallied 50 points on 43 assists and seven goals in 79 games after posting 82 points on 19 goals and 63 assists in the 2015-16 campaign.
In all, Thornton boasts 1,391 career points on 1,007 assists and 384 goals and counts three seasons with more than 100 points and 15 seasons with 60 or more points on his sparkling resume.
Quite simply, he is one of the best point scorers in NHL history and has 160 playoff games under his belt.
The 37-year-old has the resume, but he underwent surgery for a torn ACL and MCL following San Jose's postseason loss to the Edmonton Oilers. While he demonstrated his physical toughness by playing through the injury, it is fair for Sharks fans to be worried about Thorton's durability as he gets older.
At his best, he is a veteran leader and playoff-tested offensive force who will look to provide a spark for San Jose as it pursues the first Stanley Cup title of his career.
