Our first featured pencil artist of 2012 is well-known in the world of comics, but may not be familiar to people in other circles. His name is Alex Ross, and he is an artist that has produced work for both Marvel and DC comics since 1993. Early in his career, his artwork paid tribute to the great Jack Kirby, but he has since found his own style that earns him his place on the list of the greatest comic artists in the world.
Since graduating from the American Academy of Art, Alex has worked on some of Marvel and DC’s most recognizable characters, including “Spiderman,” “The X-Men,” “Batman” and “Superman.” He has also done concept art for a number of films, including the Sam Raimi “Spiderman” trilogy.
Though you wouldn’t know it by looking at his artwork in the pages of a comic book, almost every piece starts as a pencil sketch. In fact, artists are often given the title of “Pencils” because of their reliance on the tool for their early drafts. Alex’s pencil sketches range from rough character profiles, to full cover sketches and detailed spreads, and each piece shows off the artist’s skills in the medium and knack for storytelling.

I know that the illustration is done by pencil. What amazes me is the way it was done. – James P Stuckey
