1980 Team Mongoose
1980 Team Mongoose BMX. 8 month rebuild of a classic.
Worked out its a March 1980 Team Mongoose frame, built in California. Only the frame survived from the initial purchase. Nice clear serial number, but this bike was in need of some TLC.
This is the 3rd mongoose my 6 year old son and I have attempted. The 1st one was a modern mongoose ride. The 2nd is the 1999 25th anniversary bike, and finally, "THE HOLY GRAIL". We have enjoyed some great quality time doing them up. (We even did up a 1985 scooter in between waiting on bike parts!)
I was 12 years old in 1980, a time when BMX was just taking off, so truth be told, I think it's more about letting my son enjoy the same ride I did many years ago.
REBUILD:
NOS Team Mongoose forks. (sourced from Greece)
Reproduction 20" skyway II wheels, 16T freewheel, with blue skinwall tyres.
Reproduction MX890 front and rear brake calipers. New cables with dia compe clamps and MX2 brake levers.
NOS Skyway brake pads front and rear.
Reproduction kashimax aero seat and guts.
New cro-mo seat pole.
Refurbished steel mongoose seat clamp, with new nut & bolt.
Chrome freestyle chain.
Reproduction mongoose handlebar grips.
New pedals.
Reproduction mongoose pad set.
New bottom bracket set.
Reproduction decal set.
NOS Sugino chain wheel, powdercoated blue. NOS Sugino spider and new blue dia compe chain wheel bolts.
NOS mongoose mid school one piece cro-mo mongoose crank.
Refurbished double clamp gold stem, 24carat gold plated, repo mongoose sticker, polished clamps and chrome stem bolts.
New mongoose front and rear reflectors.
Due to all of the above, the wife has now banned me from purchasing another mongoose, so I hope you enjoy the pics of this one...!
