1996 Dyno VFR (Father/Son Project)

I've been inactive here on the forum for a very long time, but hopefully back into things going forward. Lot's of life issues with family and my health has declined a ton over the past 5 years, but I won't bore you all with the details. I will try to go back and update my Mongoose Decade build to fix the broken picture links soon, as well as get started on finishing up that build soon.

So my son learned to ride without his training wheels this year, and he is quickly outgrowing his kiddie bike. He is 8, but fairly small for his age. He has been asking me about getting a BMX, so I picked him up a 1996 Dyno VFR today for a deal on Facebook marketplace. At least I assume it's a VFR, but I'm no expert. This will get a general cleaning and once over to get it ready for his Christmas present, but I plan on stripping it down in the near future and building it with him as a father/son project. It's not really a "collector" type bike to me, so I don't think we will stick with stock paint and decals. I figure we will let him pick out the colors, candy metal flake paintjob or something, and I will have some custom Dyno decals printed up once I figure out what design we're going with. Serial# SY6G002209.

I'll update as we make progress.

Welcome back!

Definitely a solid project bike. I still swear by 90’s Dyno and Mongoose as great riders/projects that look good and won’t drain the bank account. Looking forward to seeing the progress!

These bikes are great for kids. Was there a big difference between the VFR and Nitro?

Thanks guys for the warm welcome back.

Honestly I'm not sure the differences between the different Dyno models of the 90s. I'm not 100% sure this is a VFR, but I'm still looking into it.

Re: 1996 Dyno VFR (Father/Son Project)

In 96 there were the Sonic, Nitro, VFR and NSX in the Dyno race line up. Also the Blaze but that was scaled down 20" geared towards littler kids. The Sonic and Nitro were the top end offerings that had the best compnents offered on Dyno completes with the Sonic being an Aluminum frame. The main difference from Nitro to VFR to NSX was components. With some of the differences as follows:

Sonic - Aluminim frame
Nitro - 4130 main tubes and fork
VFR - Hi-Ten frame and fork
NSX - Hi-Ten frame and fork

Sonic/Nitro - Micro Adjust 27.0mm GT post
VFR/NSX - standard 22.2 mm steel post

Sonic/Nitro - Alloy GT pedals
VFR/NSX - Plastic pedals

Sonic/Nitro/VFR - Inverted 1" Dyno Stem
NSX - top load dyno 1"

Sonic/Nitro/VFR - rear canti brakes
VFR/NSX - Stock front caliper brake
NSX - caliper front and rear (with a coaster brake option as well)

Sonic/Nitro/VFR - 2 piece GT chainwheel/spider combo
NSX - 1 piece sprocket

Sonic/Nitro/VFR - Weinmann 4019 36h hoops
NSX - steel 36h

Sonic - MSRP $365 (and a further upgraded option at $409)
Nitro - MSRP $249
VFR - MSRP $209
NSX - MSRP $179

Re: 1996 Dyno VFR (Father/Son Project)

Thanks for the info man, that's pretty cool breakdown. It definitely appears to be a VFR. Looking through the 1996 catalog/brochure it's the only one of those models with the same style crank sprocket ours has.

Playing with some vector images making my own logos from net images for the eventual decals. I will see what colors and possible extra designs he wants to go with after he gets it on Christmas morning.
