Built my kids a manual machine
Trying to keep myself and my kids busy so on Sunday decided to build a manual machine out of old wood I had sitting around. I made it large enough for the largest wheel bike we have, and we use various size scrap blocks to wedge the tires on the smaller wheel bikes.
By the second day my 11yr old had it down pretty good on his street bike...
We then fit his race bike...
The shipping envelope is to keep his rims from rubbing the wood supports.
By yesterday he can pretty much jump on any bike and do it. He was on his older brothers bike and my wife’s 24” cruiser...
It’s a pretty simple setup, just need a strong back for the wheel to lean on when you start out, and sturdy outriggers so it won’t tip to the sides.
Eventually after we are done experimenting I’m going to cut the correct size wedge for each tire size so it’s easy and quick to switch bikes. My older son hasn’t practiced as much as his little brother so he can’t hold it for very long and needs me to stand behind on the platform to catch him when he goes back too far.
I haven’t tried it yet as I’m too scared I’ll flip over backwards, and I’m too big for my kids to catch

Re: Built my kids a manual machine
Awesome. I don't know if I'm up to learning this yet, and my kids are too nervous to try so far. Kid 1 had to be coaxed onto the stumpy gate.
It's too bad because there are a couple spots on our track where the manual is by far the fastest way through it.

I like that! Looks a bit easier to make too! What's the purpose of the piece of wood at the front?

That’s a good looking design for the wheel slot. I like having the outriggers at the rear for stability and wouldn’t want the front tire to have to sit on top of it.

I just made mine out of scrap wood I had. It took 2 2”x6” and 1 or 2 2”x4”. Lay the 2x6 down and make it just long enough for your bike to sit on it, then attach the upright. Make your wheel box just big enough for you wheel to sit in tight without movement side to side or front to back. It’s pretty simple if your just building it for one bike. My outriggers were 30” wide

Not sure, we haven’t been able to apply it to the track. My kid can ride a wheelie pretty good but was just starting to try to manual at the track when everything shut down. Hopefully this does help....

Thanks. I saw designs like lowrider made and didn't like the support at the back. I know if i go to far back on the manual i will be jumping off the back and didn't want anything to land on and potentially blow out my old skateboarding ankle. So i moved the support to the front. The front tire stays on the main board well ahead of the support so its not in the way at all. I also didn't like the 45 degree angle support for the wheel. i knew they would be in the way for peg tricks. So this is the simple design i came up with. It also makes it so you can put the bike in with the front tire in the support to practice hang 5s, nose manuals, ect. Used a 2x4 and a 2x6 from the shop and screwed it together.
As for as working, its a yes! Its great for balance and gaining muscle memory. Of course its just a trainer and only works if you use it!

Similar in thought process to a balance board for skateboarding or surfing. Sure they sell expensive factory made units but we always used what we had around. Over 20 years ago we started using a skateboard deck(no wheels or trucks) on a two litter bottle full of water. Once you get that mastered move on to a small and then regular size basketball. The ball forces you to balance on all axis. I taught lots of people to board slide this way. If you cant balance on the two liter your not ready to jump on a rail yet! This gives a way to improve balance and gain muscle memory. Especially us old guys, we got to use it before we lose it!

You've convinced me! I have a dozen other things to do this week but think they're all going to be bumped down the list! Is yours for a 20"/class BMX? If so, have you got the basic measurements to hand? Thanks man!

Re: Built my kids a manual machine
A. 60" 2X6
B. 5" 2X4
C. 17 1/14" 2X4
D. 10 1/2" 2X4
E. 15 1/2" 2X6
The front brace is a 19" 2X6 with 2X6 blocks under it for support. The size of this brace can vary depending on what you have.
As you can see i used a 2" spacing between the tire supports. This seems to work well for 1.9-2.2 tires. i have to let some air out of my sunday 2.4 tires for them to fit.
i predrilled and screwed it together incase i wanted to make any changes.
Of course this is built for 20 bikes, but if you made the tire slot longer and and then used blocks for the tire like lowrider did, you could use bigger bikes as well. In this case i would extend the main 2X6 (A.) to accommodate and move the front brace accordingly.
Good luck with the project!!

Re: Built my kids a manual machine
Yes, thanks lowrider for the inspiration!
The other thing I want to do is not spend any money, so this morning I had a quick look in the shed and came up with this assortment of mostly old building wood:-
There’s enough 2x4 there but the nearest I’ve got to 2x6 is two pieces of 3cm x 15cm, the longest of which is 130cm/51”. I’m figuring that I could just about get away with using that for the main base (piece A above) and the shorter one for piece E and the front brace!
