RAC car insurance

RAC car insurance products

Although better known for it’s breakdown and roadside recovery services, the RAC has expanded its services in recent times to include car insurance as well as home and travel insurance. It’s main focus is still very much on the motoring side though, with policies for cars and classic cars as well as motorbikesvans and caravans.

We’re looking predominantly at RAC’s car insurance offering here, of which there are the usual three levels of cover available: third party only (TPO); third party, fire and theft (TPFT) and comprehensive (see our RAC van insurance review). On top of that RAC also offer an extra level of cover which they call Car Insurance Plus.

If you want to learn more about third party and comprehensive cover, read our guide: What does ‘third party’ and ‘comprehensive’ car insurance actually mean?

RAC Car Insurance Plus

RAC’s extra level of car insurance shares all the same benefits of conventional comprehensive car insurance, with a few added extras:

  • Uninsured driver promise – so you won’t lose your no claims bonus if your car’s vandalised or hit by an uninsured driver
  • 5 Star rated cover – RAC Car Insurance Plus has been awarded 5 stars by independent financial research company Defaqto
  • RAC member discount – meaning members pay £93 less on average for RAC Car Insurance than non-members
  • Free Motor Legal Protection – benefit from free Motor Legal Protection cover of up to £100,000 for the first 12 months of the policy, if selected

RAC black box car insurance

RAC also offers a black box (telematics) policy for young and/or new drivers.

Some of the special features of RAC’s black box policies include:

  • No curfews – Drive where you want, when you want
  • No mileage limits – We don’t impose mileage limits or charge per mile
  • No installation fees – We’ll fit the box at time and location convenient to you
  • Uninsured driver promise – so you won’t lose your no claims bonus if your car’s vandalised or hit by an uninsured driver

RAC Multicar Insurance

RAC also offers a 10% discount for every additional car you add to your policy under their Multi-car insurance. This means if you have two or more cars in your household then you could make direct savings by bundling them under the same insurance policy.

Benefits include:

  • Separate no claims bonus for each car – so yours won’t be affected if another policyholder has a scrape
  • RAC member discount – If you are an existing RAC Breakdown member, you will also get an extra discount, just for being an RAC member4
  • Friends, family and housemates can benefit from discount – as long as you all live at the same registered address
  • 5 Star rated cover – RAC Car Insurance Plus has been awarded 5 stars by independent financial research company Defaqto

RAC Temporary Car Insurance

Short term car insurance is a growing market, and is in demand from learner drivers and those that wish to borrow or use a car for just a day or a few months.

RAC offers a flexible temporary car insurance policy that can run from 1 hour to 30 days:

  • Daily insurance – short term cover starts from one hour (up to 30 days), and you can pay by the day
  • Instant cover – if you need insurance urgently, cover can start immediately
  • Range of vehicles covered – we can provide cover for cars, vans and motorhomes, and breakdown cover can be added too
  • Flexible short term cover – benefit from the flexibility of driving another car, or insuring extra drivers on your car

How much does RAC car insurance cost?

As with all car insurance companies, the amount you pay for a premium from RAC will depend on a host of different factors, including:

  • Your age
  • History of no claims
  • Make and model of your car
  • Your address
  • Where you park the car at home (on the road, driveway, garage etc…)
  • What you use the car for (commuting, driving for work etc…)
  • Annual mileage

One of the big claims from RAC is that drivers who have nine or more years of no claims can reduce the cost of premiums by up to 65% by insuring with them. They also say that you can get cover for less than £165* (that’s what 10% of their customers paid).

RAC are able to offer such competitive rates to more experienced drivers as they effectively work as an insurance broker, working with their panel of approved car insurers to find the best deal for motorists.

Although this approach can offer benefits when it comes to costs, it can lead to inconsistent customer service – which is why RAC tend to suffer from a lot of bad online reviews. The level of customer service you receive from RAC can depend on which insurer they place your policy with – as some are much better than others – so if you choose to buy insurance through RAC it is worth asking them exactly what insurance product you are buying and what insurer is underwriting it.
