Final & Best Year: 1986 Mercury Capri 5.0/5-Speed
This 1986 Mercury Capri (VIN 1MEBP79M1GF616167) is a final-year example fitted with the best factory drivetrain these cars ever had, a fuel-injected, 200 HP 5.0 liter shared with its Fox platform cousin, the Mustang. A 5-speed car with original red paint, its gray lower sections have been redone, and though the seller admits to a few small dings, overall the car looks very well kept inside and out. Mileage is given as 79k, and with a performance cam, headers, 3.73 final drive, and Koni and Eibach-equipped suspension, it should be a lot of fun to drive too. Find it here on eBay in Canton, Ohio with a $13,500 BIN.
These cars had their own look when compared to the more popular Mustang, with flared fenders, a deep front airdam, vented hood, a different fascia, taillights, and convex hatch window to name just a few differences. Note the unique C-pillar trim as well. The seller admits to a few small dings and dents on this example, but believes they should be fixable via paintless dent removal. Red paint is claimed to remain original, though the gray lower sections have been resprayed due to fade of the factory finish.
The interior looks to be in good shape, with the distinct factory three-spoke wheel and seats remaining fitted underneath a period aftermarket sunroof. The hole in the roof certainly isn’t ideal, but in light of what seems like a very desirable Fox elsewhere, it’d be easy to live with should everything else check out.
Good for 200 HP and 285 lb. ft. in factory form for these final year cars, the seller notes a Ford Performance E303 cam, “motorsport headers,” an H-pipe-equipped exhaust with Flowmaster cans, 3.73 geared rear end, a new clutch, new battery, adjustable Koni shocks, and Eibach Pro-Kit springs, several of which should contribute to a few extra horses.
Looks like the handbrake will need adjustment, but nearly everything else seems good from here–even the sleepy looking stock four-lug wheels should stay.
