1941 Packard Super Eight One-Sixty Series 1905 Touring Sedan
This 1941 Packard Super Eight One-Sixty is a 148”-wheelbase touring sedan that was purchased new on April 30, 1941, from Alvan Fuller’s Packard Motor Car Company of Boston by a Massachusetts owner, whose family remained its stewards for 64 years. The car then passed through two owners between 2005 and 2023, when it was purchased by the seller. Finished in Grove Green, it is powered by a 356ci L-head inline-eight that breathes through a single downdraft carburetor and is paired with a three-speed manual transmission with an Electromatic clutch and overdrive. Additional features include hydraulic drum brakes, coil-sprung independent front suspension, 16” wheels with chrome covers, dual side-mount spares, gray cloth upholstery, and fold-out rear jump seats. This Series 1905 touring sedan is now offered with a copy of its original sales invoice, additional early documentation, owner’s manuals, and transferable New York registration.
The 19th-series Super Eight range carried over the previous year’s three wheelbase options for the One-Sixty and One-Eighty while introducing longer bodywork with a forward-set radiator, headlights inset into the fenders, hood release handles hidden within decorative chrome spears, and a curved single-piece rear window. The 148”-wheelbase Series 1905 was offered with two body styles, including this example’s style 1471 touring sedan coachwork.
The body is finished in Grove Green, and the roof and upper door sections are believed to have been repainted. Features include centrally latching doors, front and rear bumper overriders, driving lights, a cormorant hood ornament, and a hood-mounted antenna. Turn signals were added under previous ownership.
Body-color wheels wear chrome hubcaps and beauty rings and were mounted with 7.00R16 Coker Classis wide-whitewall tires under previous ownership between 2018 and 2023, while dual side-mount spares are housed under painted covers. Stopping is handled by hydraulic drum brakes all around. A steering system refresh performed under current ownership is said to have included the replacement of the tie rod bushings.
The cabin is trimmed in gray cloth over the front and rear bench seats as well as over a pair of fold-out jump seats. Among other features are color-keyed carpeting, roll-up windows, and rear amenities including footrests, a robe rope, grab straps, dual ashtrays with cigar lighters, and a fold-down armrest. A tear on the outer driver-side edge of the front seat was repaired following the seller’s purchase.
The beige three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a woodgrain dashboard housing a horizontal-sweep 110-mph speedometer, a clock, and rectangular ancillary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 57k miles, approximately 250 of which have been added under current ownership. The factory coolant temperature gauge does not work, and a Stewart-Warner coolant temperature gauge has been fitted under the dashboard. The radio does not work.
The 356ci L-head inline-eight features a nine-bearing crankshaft, hydraulic lifters, and a single Stromberg downdraft carburetor. Output was factory rated at 160 horsepower. Service under current ownership is said to have included cleaning and tuning of the carburetor, replacement of the spark plugs, and an oil change.
Power is sent to the rear wheels by a three-speed manual transmission with an Electromatic clutch and an Aero Drive overdrive unit, both optional for the One-Sixty in 1941. Suspension incorporates a Safe-T-Flex coil-sprung independent setup and a leaf-sprung solid rear axle, with lever-arm shock absorbers and anti-roll bars at each end. Corrosion is noted on various areas of the underside and inside the engine bay.
The original sales invoice is dated April 30, 1941, and lists options including six wheels, an Electromatic clutch, and Aero Drive for a total price of $2,698.50. Additional documentation that accompanies the car includes a May 1941 letter from Packard addressed to the original owner, a Packard service coupon booklet listing the original owner’s information, fuel ration coupons and envelopes with the original owner’s name, an owner’s manual, a radio manual, and a 2005 bill of sale from the original owner’s family.
The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being sold on its registration.
