1957 Continental Mark II
This 1957 Continental Mark II is one of 444 hardtops assembled in the model’s final year and was acquired new by the current owner’s father. Chassis 3767 was later sold and underwent a refurbishment in the early 2000s that involved a repaint, an interior re-trim, and engine and transmission work before being acquired by the owner in 2020. The car is powered by a 368ci V8 equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and is finished in white over gray nylon and white leather upholstery. It features an egg-crate grille and a wrap-around windshield along with a power-adjustable front bench seat, an AM radio, and electric windows. Shifting is through a three-speed automatic transmission linked with a limited-slip differential, and further equipment includes power steering, power-assisted brakes, and 15″ steel wheels with turbine-style covers. This Continental Mark II is now offered on dealer consignment with a copy of a March 1957 invoice for the car, service records, and a clean California title in the name of the owner’s business.
Continental was introduced as a stand-alone luxury subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company with the debut of the Mark II at the Paris Motor Show in October 1955. Designed by Ford’s Special Product Operations team consisting of William Clay Ford, John Reinhart, Gordon Buehrig, and Harley Copp, the Mark II was offered as the brand’s sole model and carried a base price of approximately $10,000. Just 2,994 coupes were produced between 1955 and 1957.
The car left the factory finished in White (14) and was repainted in 2005 as part of the aforementioned refurbishment. An egg-crate grille up front is accompanied by a wrap-around windshield, and a spare tire hump is integrated into the decklid. The driver-side taillight swings away to reveal a fuel filler, and further details include a hood ornament, a driver-side mirror, a retractable antenna, chrome bumpers and trim, and dual exhaust outlets that exit through the rear bumper.
The 15″ steel wheels wear turbine-style covers and are mounted with BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires. The Mark II rode on a Y-shaped chassis with a 126″ wheelbase and utilized temperature-sensitive front shock absorbers as well as additional suspension components adapted from the standard Lincoln lineup. The car was equipped from the factory with power-assisted steering, and braking is handled by power-assisted drum brakes.
The bench seats were re-trimmed in white leather with gray nylon inserts as part of an interior refurbishment completed in 2006 and 2007. Color-coordinated trim extends to the dash as well as the door and side panels, and the dash features anodized trim along with aircraft-style auxiliary controls. The front bench seat is power-adjustable, and further interior appointments include an AM radio, a cabin heater, and electric front and rear windows. The selling dealer notes wear on the front bench seat upholstery.
The three-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a 120-mph speedometer, a 5k-rpm tachometer, a combination gauge, and an electric clock. The five-digit odometer shows 86k miles.
The 368ci Y-block V8 is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 300 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The engine was removed and serviced at the time of the repaint, according to the seller.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Turbo-Drive automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. The transmission was reportedly rebuilt as part of the aforementioned refurbishment.
A copy of a March 1957 invoice for the car lists initial delivery to Williams & Frederick Motors in San Francisco, California, and details installed equipment and colors.
