This 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado Deluxe is finished in Almond Beige over Green and powered by a 425ci “NT” Toronado Rocket V8 driving the front wheels through an automatic transmission. Factory options include green-tinted glass with a graduated windshield, climate control with A/C, a power Strato bench seat, Deluxe seat belts, an AM radio, and a tilting steering wheel. The car was sold new in northern Florida and remained with its original owners until 1999. Subsequent purchasers included collections in Boise, Idaho in September 2014 and Fort Lauderdale, Florida in January 2015, from which it was acquired by the selling dealer in October 2018. This Toronado shows 60k miles and is offered in San Diego, California with a recent service invoice and a clean Florida title.
The Toronado was introduced for the 1966 model year on October 7, 1965, and was the first front-wheel drive American production car with since the demise of Cord in 1937. This example reportedly received one repaint in its original Almond Beige at some point under previous ownership. The seller mentions a paint touch-up on the front end and a scrape on the windshield caused by one of the wipers, both of which are pictured in the gallery below.
Stock chrome Deluxe wheels wear older thin-whitewall tires and cover finned brake drums at all four corners. The seller mentions the presence of factory-style glass throughout, including the windshield.
The Deluxe model featured a Strato front seat with fold-down armrest, full-length front door armrests, optional power seat controls, assist handles, special trim, and door reflectors. This example is trimmed in green upholstery and retains a stock steering wheel, trim, instrumentation. A factory-optional AM radio remains installed and reportedly powers on but plays static most of the time.
The lights, gauges, accessories, clock, power functions, and optional climate control system work according to the seller, including the air conditioning system. The 5-digit odometer indicates just under 60k miles. The trunk compartment area is depicted in the gallery, containing a weathered factory-style vinyl liner and a spare wheel mounted with a Michelin tire.
The 425ci “NT” Toronado Rocket V8 featured a special camshaft and 10.5:1 high-compression pistons as well as a single four-barrel carburetor. Factory output was 385 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque when new, enabling the Toronado to accelerate to 60 mph in around 7.5 seconds and top out at 135 mph in period testing. A replacement factory exhaust system has reportedly been fitted, and the most recent service consisted of an oil change and new filters.
A video of this Toronado being driven can be viewed above.
The front-wheel drive layout used constant velocity joints in an attempt to limit torque steer, and new CV boots were fitted during the most recent service. Additional undercarriage photos are displayed in the gallery below.
The seller has decoded factory VIN 396876M522040 as follows:
- 3 – Oldsmobile
- 9687 – 2-Door Sports Coupe Custom
- 6 – Model Year 1966
- M – Lansing, Michigan Production Plant
