1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible 389 Tri-Power 4-Speed

This 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible was refurbished under prior ownership and purchased by the seller on BaT in April 2022. Finished in red over black vinyl upholstery, the car is powered by a replacement 389ci V8 linked to a four-speed manual transmission and a Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential. Equipment includes Tri-Power induction with three Rochester two-barrel carburetors as well as a power-operated white soft top, an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette radio with an auxiliary input, and Rally II-style wheels with redline tires. The front wheel cylinders and brake hoses were replaced along with the fuel tank and sending unit in 2024, according to the seller. This GTO convertible was listed on BaT in October 2024 and is now offered again with Pontiac Historic Services documentation, an owner’s manual, spare parts, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.
A repaint in Montero Red is believed to have occurred in the 1990s. Exterior features include a chrome driver’s side-view mirror, dual exhausts, a hood with a functional scoop, and a power-operated white soft top. The seller states that the soft top motor, switch, and pistons were replaced in 2016. Paint bubbling is noted on the driver’s door.
Rally II 14″ wheels with PMC-branded center caps and chrome trim rings are mounted with reproduction Firestone redline tires. A full-size spare is housed in the trunk. Braking is handled by unassisted four-wheel drums, and the seller notes the front wheel cylinders and hoses were replaced in preparation for the sale.
The seating surfaces are trimmed in black vinyl. The car is equipped with lap belts for all occupants as well as an aftermarket Pontiac-branded AM/FM radio with an auxiliary input.
A two-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a woodgrain instrument panel housing a 120-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. Three Auto Gage instruments are mounted under the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 49k miles, fewer than 100 of which were added under current ownership.
The replacement 389ci V8 is equipped with three Rochester two-barrel carburetors and was rated at 360 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque. An MSD distributor is installed, and the choke diaphragm housing is broken. The fuel pump, starter, and spark plugs were replaced in 2022, and the seller states the fuel tank and sending unit were replaced in 2024. The removed distributor will accompany the car.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and an optional Safe-T-Track differential.
Documentation from Pontiac Historic Services identifying factory options and equipment is included in the sale.
