Klara (Japanese: クララ Kurara) is the rival character in The Isle of Armor in Pokémon Sword. By the events of The Crown Tundra, she becomes a Poison-type Gym Leader in the Galar region.

In the core series games

Klara originally started as an underground pop singer with traits of cuteness and the virulence of poison. Despite her attempts at promoting herself, she only sold about eight copies of her debut album. After that, she decided to try out being a Gym Leader as her new goal to boost her popularity. At some point, she obtained a Galarian Slowpoke. However, she gave up on that goal after two days of harsh training at the Poison-type Gym. She eventually learned about the Master Dojo thanks to a late-night TV show. After she saw how kind Mustard looked in the commercial, Klara decided to head to the Isle of Armor to train, believing she can become stronger without trying too hard. She quickly called the Dojo to apply.

She is first encountered by the player at Wedgehurst Station, obtaining the Armor Pass needed to visit the Isle of Armor. Before she can get on the train, a Galarian Slowpoke appeared, blocking the way, requiring the player to catch it. After complimenting the player's capture of Galarian Slowpoke, she went on the train to the Isle of Armor. She eventually reached her location and became a student at the Master Dojo. However, she focused more on being doted on by others and barely worked on her training. This resulted in Klara becoming lazy due to a lack of a rival and motivation.

The player meets Klara again once they arrive at the Isle of Armor. She challenges the player to a battle off the bat, assuming they are to be the Master Dojo's new student that she has been assigned to escort. After being defeated, she attempts to scare the player away from enrolling in the Dojo, and even lies to Honey about the student in question not wanting to show up, only for the player to eventually appear at the Dojo, much to Klara's shock. She threatens the player to not tell of what transpired. During Mustard's trials, her Dojo Uniform gets stolen by Mustard's three fast Slowpoke, which the player retrieves in short order. She battles the player over the next two trials, the former over a set of Max Mushrooms she claims discovered first, and the latter as part of a formal challenge. Klara cheats during the third trial by immediately summoning Toxic Spikes on the player's side of the field. She is eventually defeated and feels guilty about playing dirty. Mustard asks Klara to look after the Dojo Pokémon afterwards.

In the post-game, after Mustard has been defeated in a final showdown, Klara can be rematched daily.

In the Galarian Star Tournament, Klara reveals that she has become a minor division Poison Gym Leader. After becoming a Gym Leader, Klara adds a Galarian Slowking to her team, having it replace her Drapion as the lead of her team.

League Cards

This is a transcript of the back of Klara's League Cards in Pokémon Sword.

Normal League Card
"Klara was originally an underground pop singer. She promoted herself as a star that had both cuteness and the virulence of poison. She energetically held live concerts and other events, even selling some Klara-themed collectables that she made herself, but in spite of everything, she only managed to sell eight copies of her debut album "Krazy for Klara." She decided becoming a Gym Leader would help her gain more popularity and has been working towards that goal since. She chose the Poison type because it matched her image and there was less competition."
Rare League Card
"The training at the Poison-type Gym was a lot harsher than Klara was ready for, and she gave up after two days. It was during this time she saw an ad for the Master Dojo during a late-night TV show. The master seemed kind, and Klara thought it would help her become strong without having to try too hard, so she immediately called in to apply. Normally, Klara's sole focus is to be doted on by others, so she puts only the bare minimum into her training, but recently a new student at the dojo has caused a change of attitude. She now works secretly with her Slowbro to better herself."

Pokémon: Twilight Wings

In The Gathering of Stars, Klara was seen looking for Max Mushrooms. She was then invited to the Galarian Star Tournament and was seen walking out onto the field at Wyndon Stadium for the opening ceremony.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

Klara debuted in Flutter!! Tickets to a New Land. She is a student at the Master Dojo and studies under Mustard's guidance. While training with Avery at the Soothing Wetlands, Klara came across an unconscious Henry Sword, suffering from the effects of Eternatus's poison. After letting Henry rest at the dojo, Klara used instructions she received from Moon and Hyde's Cram-o-matic to create medicine for Henry. At Mustard's request, Klara went to the Armor Station to greet a new student, only to find Casey Shield and Marvin. Mistaking the two for new students, Klara challenged Casey to a battle, but was easily defeated.

At the dojo, Casey and Marvin clarified that they weren't new students, much to Klara and Avery's relief. Casey and Marvin reunited with Henry and were tasked with gathering ingredients for an antidote to Eternatus's poison. At Klara's suggestion, Casey and her friends headed to the Forest of Focus to collect tree sap. Once the sap was successfully obtained, Klara and Avery went to deliver it to a Macro Cosmos employee.

In PASS35, having been motivated by the sap-collecting excursion, Klara and Avery continued their training and successfully cleared the first trial.

Klara was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Sword & Shield Series (the Japanese Sword & Shield Era). It was first released in the Japanese Peerless Fighters subset before debuting in English in the Chilling Reign expansion, with artwork by Ken Sugimori. It was also released as a Full Art card and Secret card in the same Japanese and English expansions, with artwork by Naoki Saito. A SWSH Black Star Promo version of the card with artwork by Yuu Nishida was included in the Klara Premium Tournament Collection. It allows the player to put up to two Pokémon or basic Energy cards from the discard pile into their hand or both.

Trivia

Icon of RKS Laboratories, Klara's sponsor
  • The back part of Klara's headband is the same shape as the wings of a Dustox. Her ribbons and bracelets resemble the segments and markings on Skorupi and Drapion. The ends of her ribbons look like Skorupi or Drapion's claws.
  • Klara's uniform number is "881", which can be read in Japanese as goroawase for やばい yabai, meaning "dangerous".
  • Klara’s Slowbro appears warped in her League Card, a reference to selfies that are edited to make a person appear more attractively-proportioned, but are often given away by warped objects in the photo’s background.
    • This also aligns with how Klara initially takes shortcuts to popularity, while her rare League card shows her character development as she instead puts work into it.
  • Klara and Avery are the only version-exclusive rivals.
