A Monster House (Japanese: モンスターハウス Monster House), formatted monster house in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, is a special type of room in some dungeons in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. Once the player enters the room, the music changes and a large number of Pokémon suddenly appear in the room. Monster Houses usually contain many items (typically Gummis or Wonder Tiles) and are often quite large.
Mechanics
Monster Houses usually only appear in dungeons that appear later in the game.
When the player enters a Monster House, the music changes, a large number of Pokémon suddenly pop up at once, and the screen displays the text "It's a Monster House!". The Pokémon inside that appear in a Monster House are the same Pokémon that can normally appear on the floor, but rare Pokémon are more likely to appear. If the player leaves the Monster House, the Pokémon from the Monster House will continue to chase them.
Monster Houses usually contain a large number of items or Wonder Tiles. There can only be one Monster House per floor. If a player uses a One-Room Orb when there is already a Monster House anywhere on the current floor, the entire floor becomes a Monster House. The stairs room can be a Monster House. In some games, the player's starting room of the floor can be a Monster House.
The IQ skill House Avoider causes non-player-controlled party members to avoid entering Monster Houses.
Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team
Monster Houses can appear in all post-game dungeons. Monster Houses are first able to appear in Uproar Forest. In Silver Trench and Fantasy Strait, some specific floors are always a single gigantic room, where the entire floor is a Monster House.
When rescuing another player, the destination room is guaranteed to have a Monster House.
If the game fails to generate a valid dungeon layout 10 times in a row, it falls back to creating a single floor-wide room that is a Monster House. The earliest this can happen is in Mt. Steel.[1]
In these games, the starting room of a floor can be a Monster House. Monster Houses usually contain many traps and Wonder Tiles; in dungeons that cannot spawn traps, only Wonder Tiles are the only special tiles that can spawn, often resulting in a large number of them.
Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness, and Explorers of Sky
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky, Monster Houses begin to appear in Amp Plains. However, they can appear in earlier dungeons when players are doing a job, such as taking down an outlaw.
Certain dungeons introduced in Explorers of Sky have floors with a chance for a Monster House to spawn without items, such as Zero Isle Center.
In these games, the starting room of a floor can be a Monster House.
WiiWare
In Keep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, Let's Go! Stormy Adventure Squad and Go For It! Light Adventure Squad, Monster Houses start to appear in Ruby LakeB, Jade LakeS and Mica LakeL.
In these games, the starting room of a floor can be a Monster House.
Gates to Infinity
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, Monster Houses begin to appear in Kilionea Road. Monster Houses typically contains 7-10 traps. Some Sparkling Floors can also be found in Monster Houses too.
Unlike previous games, the starting room of a floor cannot be a Monster House. Unlike previous games, when rescuing another player, they no longer need to be rescued from a guaranteed Monster House.
Super Mystery Dungeon
In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Monster Houses that randomly appear on floors only start appearing in dungeons that are unlocked sometime after completing the main story-line (or dungeons that appear after the player's Expedition Society rank has increased).
Additionally, there are also some expeditions that ask the team to head to a Pokémon's secret base, but the expedition is actually a trap that leads to a Monster House. If the team manage to get to the stairs during that expedition, the Pokémon forgives the player and they become connected. These kind of expeditions can occur starting after completing Poliwrath River.
Item lists
Red and Blue Rescue Team
There are three lists in these games, containing Poké, TMs and Wonder Orbs. However the only differences are that the second list adds Cleanse Orb, while the third one switches Rollcall Orb for it.
- List 1 consists of Magma Cavern, Sky Tower, Uproar Forest, Howling Forest, Murky Cave, Grand Sea, Far-off Sea
- List 2 consists of Silver Trench, Mt. Faraway, Western Cave, Buried Relic, Wish Cave, Desert Region, Southern Cavern, Wyvern Hill, Darknight Relic, Joyous Tower, Fantasy Strait
- List 3 consists solely of Purity Forest
Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky
- List 1 consists of all dungeons that are available before the credits roll, including those where Monster Houses can't spawn naturally. The items include Poké, TMs and Gummis, accounting for version (for example, no Blue Gummi in Darkness) and items that would be available before credits roll.
- List 2 consists of the following dungeons: Mystifying Forest, Sky Peak Station PassS, Blizzard Island, Crevice Cave, Surrounded Sea, Miracle Sea, Mt. Travail, The Nightmare, Spacial Rift, Dark Crater, Concealed Ruins and Marine Resort, as well as Special Episode dungeons (except for Star Cave). The items now include Wonder Orbs, although TMs and Gummis are still the same.
- Subtype 1: Consists of Seven Treasures dungeons, except for Sky Stairway. Gummis are less common, in favor of other items.
- Subtype 2: Consists of Zero Isle West and Zero Isle South. Gummis are even less common, in favor of other items.
- Subtype 3: Consists solely of Star Cave. The Monster Houses cannot have Trapper Orb or Trapbust Orb when compared to the main list.
- List 3 consists of the following dungeons: Lake Afar, Happy Outlook, Mt. Mistral, Shimmer Hill, Lost Wilderness, Zero Isle North, Oblivion ForestS, Treacherous WatersS, Southeastern IslandsS and Inferno CaveS. In these dungeons, Monster Houses consist of Poké and version Gummis. This list is also used by Midnight Forest and Zero Isle East if a Monster House is forced.
- List 4 consists solely of Zero Isle Center, where Monster Houses have nothing but Poké.
- List 5 consists solely of Destiny Tower. It is similar to List 2, but no TMs will be spawned, to comply with Destiny Tower having TMs only in Kecleon Shops.
