Release information
This card was included in the Ultra Prism expansion with artwork by Toyste Beach, first released in the Japanese Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon expansions. It was reprinted in the Forbidden Light expansion, originating from the Japanese expansion of the same name, in the Team Up expansion, originating from the Japanese Tag Bolt expansion, in the Unified Minds expansion, originating from the Japanese Miracle Twin expansion, as well as in the Cosmic Eclipse expansion, originating from the Japanese Alter Genesis expansion.
Unidentified Fossil was reprinted during the Sword & Shield Series in the Astral Radiance expansion with different artwork by AYUMI ODASHIMA, first released in the Japanese Time Gazer and Space Juggler expansions. This print was reprinted in the Silver Tempest expansion, first released in the Japanese Paradigm Trigger expansion.

Trivia
- This card operates much in the same way as Mysterious Fossil, first released in the Fossil expansion, in that it can evolve into several different Fossil Pokémon.
- Oddly, this is the only Fossil Trainer card that can be affected by Special Conditions.
Origin
Fossils are items in the Pokémon games that can be revived into Pokémon.The Root, Claw, Skull, and Armor Fossils appear in the Ultra Prism print's illustration. The Helix, Skull, Armor, and Sail Fossils appear in the Astral Radiance print's illustration.
