Preserved sheet moss stands as a great choice for our preserved projects (mixed moss, folia walls, but also planters!). But what is sheet moss? What is it used for and what is preserved moss? Where to buy it? Find all the answers below!
What is sheet moss?
In nature, sheet moss is also known as carpet moss or hypnum moss. It is a type of moss that grows in dense low mats or carpets on the forest floor, rocks, logs, and other surfaces in moist environments. It is characterized by its fine, delicate foliage that forms a dense, flat layer resembling a green carpet. It belongs to the genus Hypnum within the family Hypnaceae. Usually used for our mixed moss and folia walls, our sheet moss is preserved.
What is preserved moss?
Preserved moss is the secret sauce that makes moss walls low-maintenance wonders. Unlike live moss, which requires specific conditions to thrive, preserved moss undergoes a preservation process that keeps it looking fresh and vibrant without needing water or sunlight. It’s like having a piece of nature that’s frozen in time, ready to grace your walls with its beauty.
What is sheet moss used for?
In nature, it plays a significant role in the forest ecosystems by helping to retain moisture, preserving soil erosion, and providing habitat for small organisms. Our designers usually use sheet moss as a base for our folia walls and it is more or less visible depending on the foliage coverage of the wall. We love to use sheet moss for very precise shapes as it can be cut sharply. You can play with different textures and colours of the moss.
