We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dante Hoagland . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dante below.
Dante , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I have been acting since the age of 7. I am now 20 years old and currently still learning things about my craft that I never knew existed. Growing up as a child actor I wasn’t really like other kids on set. I was the kid that was quiet, observant, cool, and laid back. I didn’t really ask questions on how and what I should do, I just did whatever came natural to me. If the director came to me and told me to do it a different way, I admittedly was able to do it exactly how they wanted me to do it. Crazy right? As I started to get older, I started to learn more and more about the business. From working on projects like; the new edition story, the last og, the Watsons go to Birmingham, and young love each of these projects taught me how to better understand my craft and talent. Young love showed me how to dig deep in myself and get out my comfort zone when it comes to being in that booth saying those lines with just you and that script in front of you. The new edition movie taught me how to be comfortable with other aspects of entertainment other than just acting. The last og shaped me into being a shadow. Watching everybody in their line of work and asking questions about certain departments. Last but not least the watsons go to Birmingham helped me learn the difference between all playwrights and helped me be comfortable performing in front of an audience. I’m still learning more and more about my craft. Instead of learning in front of the camera I’m now learning the back of the camera.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Dante Myles Hoagland. I was born and raised in Somerset New Jersey and currently still reside there. I am 20 years old and I just graduated with my associates degree from Hampton university. I was the kinda kid back in the day that had his own style and didn’t let anyone tell me different. That’s how I found my way into the career of acting. Everywhere I went I always found myself entertaining people. It could’ve been at my brother’s wrestling match and there you would see me walking around with my Walkman and headphones just dancing and singing. My mother put me and brother on YouTube to capture the true essence of being standout kids. We found a management company and just submitted a video of me being myself and that’s when my career started. I think what sets me apart from people is just being myself. I’m not a loud person but I’m the person who walks in the room and admittedly gets people looking because of my style and how laidback it makes me. I’m proud of everything in my life and continue to pray on bigger and better opportunities.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would say the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative would be achieving more than what you said you were going to achieve. Sometimes people can speak the very less. They could say they want the small house instead of the mansion because their mind only wants them to achieve only what they think they can achieve. Come to find out you done did so good in life where you didn’t even realize that that house you bought wasn’t so small after all.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my view, I feel like a way that society and best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem by simple just doing nothing but supporting. This generation now so intrigued in going above and beyond to do more than support, no they want to learn your entire life and how you live your life and who you live it with. We have to do better as a society. If you like what I do, then I am grateful for that. But don’t take away from what I do to how I live. Nobody is perfect and the day we all start acting like that is the day people will be genuinely happy.
