We recently connected with Jaime Murillo and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jaime thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our mission is to empower coaches to become entrepreneurs. As a personal trainer I have seen both sides of the business. Independent coaching and Corporate coaching are very different experiences. I believe that coaches want to be independent. They want to run their own business and live on their own time. We offer coaches a boutique training studio where they can rent space from us to run their own business. No strings attached. No commitments, contracts, or employment terms. They have a high-end facility to manage and grow their business.
Jaime, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an immigrant, born in Costa Rica, and moved the Florida when I was barely 2 years old. Growing up in South Florida, I had a passion for sports and being outdoors. Fitness changed my life. Despite being very active, I was overweight growing up. In high school I joined the wrestling team and started lifting weights seriously for the first time ever. I lost over 30 pounds and gained confidence in my own self-determination. I graduated from the University of Florida and immediately began coaching others. I worked two jobs until I realized that coaching is what I was passionate about. I learned all about Kettlebells, Functional Lifting, and other forms at Equinox where I helped average people do above average things. I love helping people transform their lifestyles for the better!
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met Justin at Equinox Miracle Mile. I had just started my management journey with Equinox and Justin was a top performer there. I spent just a month as a manager before the pandemic closed everything down. Justin was one of the first coaches to be ready to go when we reopened. I respected his business and how consistent he was. He was never worried about maintaining or growing his business. He left Equinox shortly after I switched clubs and we kept in touch, but it wasn’t until summer of 2022 that we really sat down to talk about our ambitions. We both want to be successful and believe in the independent coach. Once we realized we aligned their we set our sights on the best spot to start in Los Angeles.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I moved to LA with $3000 in credit card debt, used to finance the move, and only a year of experience training privately. After almost missing the interview I was able to lock my first personal training job with Equinox. I was determined to make it. I remember having just a couple hundred dollars per month to do anything with my then girlfriend. We barely had enough to pay rent and get by but she believed in me and I did too. It didn’t take long. In the first 3 months I went from 0 clients to 14. I was doing 95 sessions per month and never looked back. I did it by learning from other coaches, hustling on the gym floor, and never taking no for an answer. Once I knew I could do this I set my sights on managing. I wanted to learn if I could help build up other coaches too. In my time at Equinox I took over 10 coaches from 0 sessions to 100+. I understood the game and even during the pandemic I was able to exceed my own expectations. When others were struggling out of work, I pivoted to private training. I built a garage gym at my house with credit cards and used it to attract clients. I even bought and sold pandemic materials. That year I made the most I had ever in my life. Any challenge that comes up I stay committed to my work. Never looking back.
