We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Reeves recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I had recently moved down south, and through our move we had a fantastic realtor who helped us with the stressful process of moving to a new area. Through that connection later on, he introduced me to a new client who was a joy to work with and had a wonderful story to share.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have a deep desire to connect with other creatives, which has led me to become a children’s book illustrator and designer. I love the experience of working with someone else to bring their vision to life, add the visual elements that make a story stand out, and then guide through the self-publishing process to get a beautiful, crafted book that is uniquely told through the voice of the author and illustrator.
The process of getting a book made at all these days is daunting, but now with the freedoms we have now as individuals with access of the internet, we have so many possibilities for making a book become a reality. It also means that you need to know what you’re doing, and to understand the ins and outs of getting a book produced and distributed.
I love helping people reach their dream of seeing the book on a book shelf and taking the burden off their shoulders so they can be free to focus on what’s important; making a beautiful book into a reality. Each project is a creative process to get the author what they’re looking for, and that relationship is the exciting inspiration that makes every book project fun and unique.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, I get a thrill out of helping others, and seeing their satisfaction and excitement in our projects. It’s really a partnership, and we both put a lot of work into it to make a beautiful piece of work to share with the world. I couldn’t do it without my wonderful clients, and it’s super rewarding to be inspired by their narratives and direction. It’s one thing to work on a project alone in your own space, but having that space shared with someone else who participates in a different way than I do makes the journey so much more enriching.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I love seeing my clients get excited about the book as we get it put together. It’s like working with a friend on a dream project every day. I love giving them a gift of artwork and book design that makes their story become real and tangible.
I love to make art, but a really thrive on making other people feel inspired and excited about their ideas. I believe everyone is unique and that we can all share our stories with each other in touching ways because of that personal narrative. I also know from experience that getting to that part of the journey is overwhelming and difficult to navigate, which I why I want to help and am driven to see people find their moment to shine their light into the world without stressing out over the details of production and publication.
