We were lucky to catch up with Robert Jordan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risks I’ve made in my life thus far was moving away from Georgia to Tennessee, where I currently reside. I left behind family, friends, and many opportunities. At times, I feel that I left incomplete. What I mean by that is I feel like I didn’t accomplish everything that I desired. I didn’t become who I desired, and feel that I didn’t leave the mark as a visionary which I intended.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I was born in Augusta, Georgia. Lived in Atlanta, Georgia at different times throughout my life. My love and interest for photography was birthed when I moved away from home for college in Columbia, South Carolina back in 2007. My dad bought me a Sony Cybershot digital camera as a graduation gift. At first, I didn’t use as much. I’d only use to take photos of my sneakers to post on MySpace. As time went on and I began to make friends around campus, they’d always ask me to take pictures of them to post on MySpace for their families back home. At that time, I didn’t think much of it. But as I got older, I realized how sentimental those memories are because at some point, we all grow and go in our respective directions in life. It’s unfortunate that I no longer have those photos to look back at and reminisce on, but I have the memories, Now, I realize how important it is to hold onto those sentimental moments and memories captured.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One thing I had to come to the realization and accept is that some people won’t truly understand how deep my love and passion for photography goes. I’m not a photographer. I’m a visual artist. It’s so much for to me than picking up my camera and pressing the shutter button. I have to be more truthful with myself in regards to this, as well. Just because the opportunity sounds great, it may not be meant for me and my visual abilities., as well as not worth the time, trouble, or money being paid.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes. There are several goals I have that drive my creative journey. The overall goal for me to be able to go places I’ve always wanted to go, and document the moments in time through my own eyes. To just be free and at peace, and create with nothing and no one holding me back. Japan is at the top of my list of dream destinations.
