Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Survi Nathany. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Survi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I studied Textile design from one of the premier institute of design in INDIA, I was born and brought up in NEPAL where I got to see the beautiful textiles created by the talented artisans. I was always very drawn to it and after learning more about textiles and the various processes of weaving in the design school, it gave me different perspective. I got more and more interested to create and design and help the artisans in Nepal to have a broader reach globally which was possible once I moved to the US in 2010. I realized I will be able to help these artisans by bridging the gap by showcasing their creations in front of the world by helping them create pieces which were globally accepted . Hence PASHN was born .. As a brand, we are not only passionate to help these communities but also trying to preserve the age-old art which may be lost soon.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
PASHN is a signature label that brings together the ethos of authentic traditional craftsmanship and the contemporary outlook of the designer. Under the label, we have been offering exceptional quality ponchos, scarves, and jewelry inspired by Indian and Nepalese culture, to customers in San Diego since 2015. Nepal is home to entire communities of skilled artisans and craftsmen who are working for generations, creating beautiful woven pashminas and artifacts. The art of hand-crafting and these artisans form the core of our label. Pashn by Survi as a brand believes in fair practice. We ensure that our craftsmen are fairly paid and well taken care of.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
As pandemic came, and I had to shut down my store here in San Diego which was a big setback for me .. But that gave rise to growing my e-commerce business . We tried various platforms like my own website, Amazon , Etsy, Instagram shopping, Email marketing. It was a great learning curve for me from selling in person to selling online .. we feel proud that in few months of time we are now able to reach customer globally and get 5 star reviews for our products and services .. The biggest thing which we have learnt by being a e-commerce brand is that its very important to gain the trust of your customer by providing them the best services.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process./
The products are manufactured in my home town Nepal. Yes I had to find the right vendors/artisans to make the products which catered to the US market standards, sometimes it was very difficult to communicate with them to get the right size, shade as distance was a problem, I had to stay awake all night to communicate with them on video call because of the time zone difference..it was a big learning for me as well as for them so that they could deliver the right products. I learnt a lot about sizing, styles and colors which were more popular. Returning the products back to them wasn’t an option incase of a defect or any other issue because of the high shipping cost and duties, so I had to make sure whatever I ordered was absolutely right.
