11. Thames shipwreck surveyed by three vessels off Kent, UK - Newsflare

Within the last month three different survey vessels have been seen near Thames shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery off Kent, UK American Liberty ship SS Montgomery sank in 1944, with 1400 tonnes of explosives onboard 1.5 miles north of Sheerness. It's the UK's most dangerous and monitored shipwreck under 24-hour radar and visual surveillance. Vessel Thames Guardian was seen undertaking multiple surveys today (November 7 - and also November 3 & October 30) including: a multibeam sonar survey, gradiometer survey and chirp survey around the wreck and surrounding areas. A chirp survey is used to detect unexploded ordnance. Clinton Marine's Northern Wind was seen surveying October 18, and their vessel Lode was seen October 16. Normally only one sonar survey of the wreck is undertaken each year by a single survey vessel to assess its condition. The dramatic increase in survey activity is due to a problem encountered by the UK Government's plans to cut-off the shipwrecks three masts last year. Unidentified objects were found on the seabed in areas where a platform would need to be installed for the mast cutting - which meant the work has had to be postponed - to allow officials to gain more information and determine the safest way to proceed.

I am fascinated by both London, and the impact that London has had on the wider country. Even some of the most remote parts of the surrounding counties have felt the threat of London’s continual growth, and the infrastructure needed to service the rapacious city. To find such a place, and to walk what has been called the country’s most dangerous footpath, took me to Wakering Stairs in Essex last Sunday morning at 7am, ready to walk the Broomway.

Close-up footage filmed this morning (May 30) of the UK's most dangerous shipwreck - SS Richard Montgomery - in the Thames Estuary 1.5 miles north of Sheerness in Kent. The WW2 American Liberty cargo ship sank off the Kent coast in August 1944, with an estimated 1400 tonnes of explosives still onboard. The ship's three masts are due to be cut off due to severe corrosion, to avoid the risk of setting off the cargo were they were to fall on the cargo below. Work on the 'mast trimming' is expected to start in June as part of a £5 million operation. The wreck is surrounded by a buoyed 'exclusion-zone' which craft must not enter, and which is monitored 24/7 by Port of Sheerness on behalf of the UK Coastguard. Footage at the end shows three huge missile-proof gas storage tanks on the Isle of Grain in the distance, whose close proximity to the wreck site concerns some experts.
