Defense mechanism

There are two important defense mechanisms against inhaled particles. The first of these involves the mucociliary escalator and consists of the trapping of particles in mucus followed by the upward movement of the mucus brought about by the upward beating of cilia on the airway epithelial airway cells. The material is then either swallowed or expectorated. The second mechanism is macrophage mediated. Macrophages engulf particles and either deposit them on the mucociliary escalator or enter the lymphatic system. [Pg.324]

Toxicants may also be detoxified by xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450 or the flavin-containing monooxygenase. It should be borne in mind, however, that these enzymes may also activate toxicants to more reactive, and potentially more toxic, metabolites. [Pg.324]

There are numerous disparities and contradictions in the structure of our personalities. A part of us may want constant attention in order to feel secure, for example, while another part is threatened by attention and wants to be left alone. A part may want to work hard and become famous another part doesn t like work and sleeps late. In some ways we love our mother, in other ways we hate her. Life also provides frustrations you want something, but you can t have it. The consequent feelings of frustration can cause great suffering, especially if they connect with various aspects of our personality. There are realistic ways of dealing with contradictions and suffering, and unrealistic ways. We shall focus on the latter in this chapter. [Pg.130]

This kind of psychological buffering can work within a particular identity state, and shifting between identity states can also act as a buffer, as we shall discuss below. [Pg.131]

Notice that with this analogy there is still something there that we could notice if we wanted to or trained ourselves to, but ordinarily the change is small enough that it doesn t force itself on our attention. The sudden shock is buffered out. This possibility of noticing the contradictions in ourselves is utilized in GurdliefTs method of self-observation, discussed in Chapter 17. [Pg.131]

Gurdjieff did not write very specifically about the nature of buffers. Perhaps he did not think it necessary. If you became very good at selfobservation, you would neutralize the buffers, so why take time to study them. [Pg.131]

Some people may use one or two of these for almost all their defense needs. That is, they have a chief form of defense that is central in the structure of their false personality. But we all use many of these defenses on occasion. We will look at them primarily in relation to the goal of waking up from consensus trance. I have not attempted to cover all defense mechanisms or all their subleties, but more information about them can be found in any abnormal-psychology text. [Pg.132]

Phytoalexins are low molecular weight compounds produced in plants as a defense mechanism against microorganisms. They do, however, exhibit toxicity to humans and other animals in addition to microbes (30). Usually fairly high concentrations of such a drug are needed for effective control of an infection because the inhibitor (the false substrate) should occupy as many active centers as possible, and also because the natural substrate will probably have a greater affinity for the enzyme. Extracts from 152 plant species, representing 46 different families, were screened for effects on tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) replication in cucumber cotyledons. Twenty species have shown enough activity to warrant further study. Several members of the Caprifoliaceae family increased virus replication. An extract of Lonicera involucrata enlarged the virus lesions in local lesion hosts and produced a thirty fold increase in virus titer, but had no effect on virus replication in systemic hosts. The active material appears to affect the virus defense mechanism of local lesion hosts. An extract of common geranium is an active virus inhibitor. It inactivates TMV and TMV-RNA (ribonucleic acid) in vitro by forming non-infectious complexes. In vivo, it also inhibited starch lesion formation in cucumber cotyledons incited by TMV infection. In both cases, a seeming virus stimulator (twinberry extract) and a virus inhibitor (tannic acid) operated in a more or less similar way in the cucumber-TMV system.
