The parent diene of conjugated diene systems is C=C—C=C. This system in a hexane solvent absorbs at 217 nm. If the conjugated system is increased, the wavelength of the [Pg.348]

Example 5.2 is a little more complicated. The parent diene is at 217 nm. The diene system is within a ring, as in Example 5.1, so we add 36 nm. There is one double bond extension to the system. As you can see, the conjugated system consists of three double bonds rather than two double bonds. This adds [Pg.350]

Examples 5.3 and 5.4 are molecules with very similar formulas, but different structures. The double bonds are in different positions. The wavelength of the absorption maximum for Example 5.3 is 309 nm, which is 54 nm longer than in Example 5.4. The major difference between the two compounds is that the molecule in Example 5.3 has a two double bonds within one ring and a conjugated system of three double bonds, that is, the double bonds are each separated by one single bond. That results in the addition of 36 nm for the diene in a ring and 30 nm for the double bond extension. In Example [Pg.350]

there are three double bonds, but the system is not conjugated. The double bond farthest to the right (on the upper part of the ring containing the two double bonds) is separated by two single bonds from the parent diene and is not part of a conjugated system. [Pg.350]

When butadiene is treated with PdCU the l-chloromethyl-7r-allylpalladium complex 336 (X = Cl) is formed by the chloropalladation. In the presence of nucleophiles, the substituted 7r-methallylpalladium complex 336 (X = nucleophile) is formed(296-299]. In this way, the nucleophile can be introduced at the terminal carbon of conjugated diene systems. In the synthesis of morphine, bis-cyclization of the octahydroisoqtiinolinc precursor 171 by the intramolecular Heck reaction proceeds using palladium trifluoroacetate and 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidine (PMP). The insertion of the diene system forms the rr-allylpalladium intermediate 172, which attacks the phenol intramolecularly to form the benzofuran ring (see Section 1.1.1.3). The intramolecular coupling of organostannanes is applied to macrolide synthesis. In the zearalenone synthesis, no cyclization was observed between arylstannane and alkenyl iodide. However, intramolecular coupling take.s place between the alkenylstannane and aryl iodide in 706. A similar cyclization is possible by the reaction of the alkenylstannane 707 with enol triflate[579]. When Diels and Alder published their famous paper in 1928, Diels had been working with related reactions for several years [6]. In 1925, Diels reported the reaction of azodicarboxylic ester (Et0C(0)2CN=NCC(0)0Et) with compounds containing a conjugated diene system.
