DMPC films. Direct measurement of interaction forces in films stabilised by neutral phospholipids has been first done with microscopic foam films from suspensions of small unilamellar DMPC vesicles [286]. The modes of operation of a DMA are varied. Using a multifrequency mode, the viscoelastic properties of the sample are studied as a function of frequency, with the oscillation amplitude held constant. These tests can be run at single or multiple frequencies, in time sweep, temperature ramp, or temperature step/hold experiments. In multistress/strain mode, frequency and temperature are held constant and the viscoelastic properties are studied as the stress or strain is varied. This mode is used to identify the LVR of the material. With creep relaxation, the stress is held constant and deformation is monitored as a function of time. In stress relaxation, the strain is held constant and the stress is monitored versus time. In the controlled force/strain rate mode, the tanperature is held constant, while stress or strain is ramped at a constant rate. This mode is used to generate stress/ strain plots to obtain Young s modulus. In isostrain mode, strain is held constant during a tanpera-ture ramp to assess shrinkage force in films and fibers. Measurements of the disjoining forces in films prepared from 1 wt.% solutions of this perfluoroester in dodecane reveal no repnlsion until the film thickness becomes 17.5 nm. Bergeron et al. [29] suggest that this behavior represents strong evidence of positive contributions to the disjoining pressnre isotherm from steric interactions. They find that such air-dodecane-air films do not rupture even with an external capillary suction pressure of >30 kPa (which corresponds to > 0.3 bar). [Pg.510]

The deformation of soft surfaces can be minimized with SFM by selecting cantilevers having a low force constant or by operating in an aqueous environment. The latter eliminates the viscous force that arises from the thin film of water that coats most surfaces in ambient environments. This viscous force is a large contributor to the total force on the tip. Its elimination means that the operating force in liquid can be reduced to the order of 10 N. [Pg.95]

The specimen is mounted in a punch-type shear fixture, and the punch (1 in. diameter) is pushed down at a rate of 0.05 in./min until the moving portion of the sample clears the stationary portion. Shear strength is calculated as the force per area sheared. Shear strength is particularly important in film and sheet products where failures from this type of load may occur (Fig. 2-21).
