Pesticide development

These chemorational techniques have generated great interest in, and high expectations for, the acceleration of development of innovative pesticides. However, many purportedly successful appHcations of QSAR procedures have reHed on the quaHtative insights traditionally associated with art-based pesticide development programs. Retrospective QSAR analyses have, however, been helpful in identifying the best compounds for specific uses (17). Chemorational techniques have also found some appHcations in the development of pesticides from natural product lead compounds, the best known examples being the synthetic pyrethroid insecticides (19) modeled on the plant natural product, pyrethmm. Pesticide immunoassays have been developed for a variety of pesticides and, more recently, GMOs, and have been used for matrices such as surface water, groundwater, runoff water, soil, sediment, crops, milk, meat, eggs, grain, urine and blood. ° Table 9 is a partial list of immunoassays for chemical pesticides developed since 1995 and includes notations on the matrices studied. Chemists - pesticide developers - failed to consider the natural environment s most important law natural selection. When a given species with a large population undergoes pressure from an unusual factor, individuals survive who have characteristics that accidentally allow them to be less sensitive to that factor. If less sensitivity is genetic, then the entire next generation will be less sensitive to this factor. This is exactly how the evolutionary process has worked for many millions of years. As discussed below, not only have the above organizations helped to protect human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals, but also their regulatory requirements and mandates have effectively forced changes in the way in which chemists are trained and their approach to chemical design. Pesticides are vital agricultural tools that protect food and fiber plants from damage by insects, weeds, diseases, nematodes, and rodents. U.S. agriculture spends about 8 billion annually on pesticides, representing about 70% of domestic pesticide sales. The dependence of agriculture on chemical pesticides developed over the last 60 years as the agricultural sector shifted from labor-intensive production methods to more capital- and chemical-intensive methods. Lethality has already been mentioned in the previous chapter, and at one time, this was considered the important measure of toxicity in experimental animals and was quantified as the LD50 (see below). However, it is an unnecessary and crude measure of the all-or-none type, which is dependent upon and can be influenced by many factors and so will show considerable variability.
