Surface structure ordered

Si-Si bonds on the crystalline substrate surface also break to aid in the accommodation of strain in the clusters of deposited material, resulting in partial loss of the surface structural order. Tlie coordination defects of the Si atoms in the partially amorphized surface are passivated by transport of available H atoms that are bonded to overcoordinated Si atoms in the deposited clusters. These processes determine the structure and composition of the interface that forms between the deposited material and the crystalline substrate. The above relaxation mechanisms stabilize the amorphous pockets on the deposition surface, which grow and coalesce as more radicals arrive from the gas phase to form an amorphous film on the crystalline substrate. The three-dimensional synnnetry that is present in the bulk of a crystalline solid is abruptly lost at the surface. In order to minimize the surface energy, the themiodynamically stable surface atomic structures of many materials differ considerably from the structure of the bulk. These materials are still crystalline at the surface, in that one can define a two-dimensional surface unit cell parallel to the surface, but the atomic positions in the unit cell differ from those of the bulk structure. Such a change in the local structure at the surface is called a reconstruction. [Pg.289]

One fiirther method for obtaining surface sensitivity in diffraction relies on the presence of two-dimensional superlattices on the surface. As we shall see fiirtlrer below, these correspond to periodicities that are different from those present in the bulk material. As a result, additional diffracted beams occur (often called fractional-order beams), which are uniquely created by and therefore sensitive to this kind of surface structure. XRD, in particular, makes frequent use of this property [4]. Transmission electron diffraction (TED) also has used this property, in conjunction with ultrathin samples to minimize bulk contributions [9]. [Pg.1756]

A large number of ordered surface structures can be produced experimentally on single-crystal surfaces, especially with adsorbates [H]. There are also many disordered surfaces. Ordering is driven by the interactions between atoms, ions or molecules in the surface region. These forces can be of various types covalent, ionic, van der Waals, etc and there can be a mix of such types of interaction, not only within a given bond, but also from bond to bond in the same surface. A surface could, for instance, consist of a bulk material with one type of internal bonding (say, ionic). It may be covered with an overlayer of molecules with a different type of intramolecular bonding (typically covalent) and the molecules may be held to the substrate by yet another fomi of bond (e.g., van der Waals). The major role of TOF-SARS and SARIS is as surface structure analysis teclmiques which are capable of probing the positions of all elements with an accuracy of <0.1 A. They are sensitive to short-range order, i.e. individual interatomic spacings that are <10 A. They provide a direct measure of the interatomic distances in the first and subsurface layers and a measure of surface periodicity in real space. One of its most important applications is the direct determination of hydrogen adsorption sites by recoiling spectrometry [12, 4T ]. Most other surface structure teclmiques do not detect hydrogen, with the possible exception of He atom scattering and vibrational spectroscopy. [Pg.1823]

Surfiice order and cleanliness. The most common use of LEED is in association with other surface analysis or surfiice research methods, to check surfiice structural order and cleanliness. A visual display of the diffraction pattern is used. An expected pattern, with sharp diffracted beams, is an indication that the surfiice is clean and well ordered. [Pg.260]

LEED is the most powerfiil, most widely used, and most developed technique for the investigation of periodic surface structures. It is a standard tool in the surface analysis of single-crystal surfaces. It is used very commonly as a method to check surface order. The evolution of the technique is toward greater use to investigate surface disorder. Progress in atomic-structure determination is focused on improving calculations for complex molecular surface structures. [Pg.262]

Because LEED theory was initially developed for close packed clean metal surfaces, these are the most reliably determined surface structures, often leading to 7 p factors below 0.1, which is of the order of the agreement between two experimental sets of 7-V curves. In these circumstances the error bars for the atomic coordinates are as small as 0.01 A, when the total energy range of 7-V curves is large enough (>1500 eV). A good overview of state-of-the-art LEED determinations of the structures of clean metal surfaces, and further references, can be found in two recent articles by Heinz et al. [2.272, 2.273]. [Pg.82]

Surface SHG [4.307] produces frequency-doubled radiation from a single pulsed laser beam. Intensity, polarization dependence, and rotational anisotropy of the SHG provide information about the surface concentration and orientation of adsorbed molecules and on the symmetry of surface structures. SHG has been successfully used for analysis of adsorption kinetics and ordering effects at surfaces and interfaces, reconstruction of solid surfaces and other surface phase transitions, and potential-induced phenomena at electrode surfaces. For example, orientation measurements were used to probe the intermolecular structure at air-methanol, air-water, and alkane-water interfaces and within mono- and multilayer molecular films. Time-resolved investigations have revealed the orientational dynamics at liquid-liquid, liquid-solid, liquid-air, and air-solid interfaces [4.307]. [Pg.264]

Fig. 5 shows data from a simulation of TIP4P water that is confined on both sides by a rhombohedral mercury crystal with (111) surface structure. Bosio et al. [135] deduce from their X-ray studies that a solid o-mercury lattice with a larger lattice constant in the z direction may be used as a good structural model for liquid mercury. Thus, the mercury phase was modeled as a rigid crystal in order to simplify the simulations. The surface of such a crystal shows rather low corrugation. [Pg.359]

The surface consists of terraces of a height of 330 30 pm. Within error limits, this is the value that would be expected for Ge(lll) bilayers. Furthermore, we were able to observe that the electrodeposition gave rise to a less ordered surface structure with nanoclusters, transforming over a timescale of about 1 hour into a layered structure. With GeBr4 a transformation of clusters into such a layered surface was only partly seen with GeGl4 this transformation could not be observed. [Pg.315]

With diblock copolymers, similar behavior is also observed. One component is enriched at the surface and depending on miscibility and composition a surface-induced ordered lamellar structure normal to the surface may be formed. Recent investigations include poly (urethanes) [111], poly(methoxy poly (ethyleneglycol) methacrylate)/PS [112] and PS/PMMA [113, 114]. In particular the last case has been extensively studied by various techniques including XPS, SIMS, NR and optical interferometry. PS is enriched at the surface depending on blockcopolymer composition and temperature. A well ordered lamellar structure normal to the surface is found under favourable conditions. Besides crystalline order and structure, the chain conformation and segment orientation of polymer molecules in the vicinity of the surface are also expected to be modified due to the specific interaction and boundary condition at the surface between polymers and air (Fig. 1 a). According to detailed computer simulations [127, 128], the chain conformation at the free polymer surface is disturbed over a distance corresponding approximately to the radius of gyration of one chain. The chain segments in the outermost layers are expected to be oriented parallel to the surface and chain ends will be enriched at the surface. Experiments on the chain conformation in this region are not available, but might be feasible with evanescent wave techniques described previously. This area of research is still at its beginning and many aspects are not resolved. This includes in particular the structure and conformation of polymers at an interface as well as the modification of polymer dynamics by the interface. We have given several examples of the potential of surface and interface analytical techniques. They provide information on surface roughness, surface composition, lateral structure, depth profiles, surface-induced order and interfacial mixing of polymers on a molecular and sometimes subnanometer scale. They thus offer a large variety of possible surface and interface studies which will help in the understanding of polymer structure and dynamics as it is modified by the influence... [Pg.394]

The main problem in Eas0 vs. correlations is that the two experimental quantities are as a rule measured in different laboratories with different techniques. In view of the sensitivity of both parameters to the surface state of the metal, their uncertainties can in principle result of the same order of magnitude as AX between two metals. On the other hand, it is rare that the same laboratory is equipped for measuring both single-crystal face is not followed by a check of its perfection by means of appropriate spectroscopic techniques. In these cases we actually have nominal single-crystal faces. This is probably the reason for the observation of some discrepancies between differently prepared samples with the same nominal surface structure. Fortunately, there have been a few cases in which both Ea=0 and 0 have been measured in the same laboratory these will be examined later.
