Coaxum joined The Citadel football staff ahead of 2024 spring training, earning the title as special teams coordinator with gameday management oversight.
Previously, the Charleston native served as the head coach of Bluefield State between 2021-2023, resurrecting the program following a 40-year hiatus. He took over at BSC following a stint at the University of Northern Colorado as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. Prior to Northern Colorado, Coaxum served as a senior special teams analyst at Kansas under Les Miles. Additionally, the journeyman coach made stops at a variety of institutions across the country, including one season at Central Michigan as special teams coordinator and cornerbacks (2018), Denver Broncos assistant special teams coordinator (2015-2017), Baltimore Ravens special teams assistant (2014) and Army linebackers and cornerbacks (2007-14). Additionally, Coaxum participated in the NFL's Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship Program with the New York Giants (2008) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012).
During his lone season at Kansas, punter Kyle Thompson was named as a Ray Guy Watch List Finalist, finishing 20th nationally in punt average at 44.5 yards per punt. Kansas also had the top kickoff coverage unit in the Big 12.
While at Central Michigan, Coaxum mentored kicker Ryan Tice to a Lou Groza semifinalist in his first year as a starter and an overall 80 percent FG conversion rate. Tice was also named second-team All-MAC. Defensively, Coaxum coached a pair of first-team All-MAC players in Sean Murphy-Bunting and Xavier Crawford, both of whom were selected during the 2019 NFL Draft: Murphy-Bunting (39th overall) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Crawford (195th overall) to the Houston Texans.
A graduate of West Point, Coaxum worked with his alma mater for nearly a decade, helping the secondary finish Top 5 in Pass Defense on a pair of occasions (3rd in 2009, 5th in2011). He demonstrated a strong ability to develop players quickly as he mentored four players to take starting roles as true freshmen with the Black Knights. He also showcased an ability to develop leaders as three of his players went on to be voted team captains while another was named Brigade Captain (highest ranking cadet) of the Corps of Cadets.
During his time with the Baltimore Ravens, Coaxum help coach special team units that led NFL in kickoff return average (28.3) and net punt average (43.3) while ranking third in gross punt average (47.4).
The Denver Broncos finished the 2015 season ranked seventh in NFL overall special teams ranking (Gosselin Rankings) and played an integral role in winning the franchise's third Super Bowl. While with the franchise, Broncos special team units returned a punt for a TD and blocked two field goals. During Super Bowl L, Denver set a record with the longest punt return in Super Bowl history via a 61-yard scamper by Jordan Norwood.
Coaxum served as a three-year starter at cornerback for the Army while also running track for the Black Knights. He sits tied for fourth all-time for pass breakups in a single season, tied for 10th all-time for passes defended in a single season and tied for 14th all-time in career pass breakups. Coaxum graduated in May 2000 and was commissioned into the Field Artillery, spending his active duty time at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
A native of Charleston, S.C., Coaxum was inducted into the Hall of Fame at his high school, R.B Stall.
