Linus Benedict Torvalds je fínsky programátor, ktorý začal vývoj Linuxu, jadra operačného systému a dodnes je správcom hlavnej vetvy vývoja.
Inšpirovaný Minixom , cítil potrebu schopného UNIXového operačného systému, ktorý by bolo možné prevádzkovať na jeho domácom PC. Torvalds začal s vývojom pôvodne vo svojom voľnom čase a s vlastným vybavením.
