The design team attained the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold rating from the U.S. Green Building council to make Courthouse Square the first "green" building in South Dakota. Many sustainable strategies were incorporated including the use of renewable energy, local materials, natural day lighting, and underground parking which help reduce operating costs by 38%. Over 78% of the project materials were manufactured within 500 miles of the city and obtained locally, along with building materials that have a recycled content of more than 40%. The building is also heated and cooled by a geothermal system. The facility has been operating with total satisfaction and within this short period, the structure has become a city landmark by remaining environmental and the look of long-lasting elegance.
