Category:Photographs by Kobi Gideon

Hello Cryptic-waveform,

Can you please explain this -- Geagea (talk) 11:15, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

@Geagea: Sure thing. DEFAULTSORT on this page is unwanted as there is already a sortkey on Category:Photographs by photographer from Israel and it's better for the sortkey to be unspecified on Category:Kobi Gideon. As for hiding the category, it's already the case for 32% of the "Photographs by" categories ([1], [2]) so not a new invention. I personally prefer making these categories hidden. I don't consider a file that has only a "Photographs by" category as categorized as it's missing categories about the content of the image. Therefore if the "Photographs by" category is hidden, bots can mark more files as uncategorized. I realize that this is more of a preference than a rule so if you would rather leave the categorize not hidden, it's fine by me. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:14, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
a. DEFAULTSORT - disagree with you. the sort of Category:Photographs by photographer from Israel should be using DEFAULTSORT.
b. hiding the category - disagree. It's not coverd by any policy in Commons. Every can have any own preference but her we need collaboration with other users. Kobi Gideon is a photographers of the Government Press Office of Israel. it's not photographer from flickr. There is no need to hide the category. Anyway in Commons we need a consensus for that. -- Geagea (talk) 18:03, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
Regarding DEFAULTSORT, it's already correctly sorted because there is a sortkey specified for Category:Photographs by photographer from Israel. But if you prefer DEFAULTSORT, that's fine too. What I was trying to say is that the page has 2 competing sortkeys. I applied diff to correct this. As for hidden or not, I don't feel strongly. I also don't make a difference between photographers, they're all contributing to the common knowledge whether they're professionals or amateurs. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:16, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
Well, hidden categories are for maintenance. If I'm uploading my own photographs, that can be hidden. works by photographers, painters etc. should not be hidden.
For the defaultsort. It's meant to the future new categories. They will be automatically categorised. -- Geagea (talk) 21:36, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Doublons

Salut ! Je viens de voir que ton bot parvient à identifier des doublons qui ne sont pas identiques au niveau binaire:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AGamma-radiation-counters-at-epas-las-vegas-national-research-center-may-1972_6990360970_o.jpg&diff=727785740&oldid=726562921&diffmode=source

duplicates

Hi Cryptic-waveform, for quite some of your x000 duplicates to process, the deletion/process-direction is from somewhat-higher-resolution to somewhat-lower-resolution image, such as with File:Looking Into the Downtown Core Area of Portland, From the West Hills, the 43-Story First National Bank Building Shows Lights on Only a Few Floors at 8 P.M. During the State's Energy Crisis in the Fall of 1973 11-1973 (4272470632).jpg. Is this intentional or should I revert the direction in such cases? --Túrelio (talk) 10:42, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

@Túrelio: Thanks for letting me know! I assumed that in every case we'd want to keep the record from NARA rather than the one from Flickr. I didn't take into account that the image from Flickr might have a higher resolution. IMO it would be preferential to keep the record from NARA with the higher resolution image. Is this something that can be easily achieved with the deduplication tool? Or should I look into uploading the higher-resolution image to the NARA record? Or am I plain wrong and it doesn't matter if we don't keep the NARA record as it's also attached to the TIF images? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:08, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
When working with the duplicate-script, the size (pix and kB) are shown. A possibility to at least keep a link to the higher-res Flickr-version would be to paste the Flickr-link into the NARA-version description-template at | Other versions =. However, in the NARA-template that field is usually already filled with a gallery. Another place might be below the last }} of the description-template. Of course, all that significantly increases the amount of manual work. --Túrelio (talk) 16:30, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
How about making such modifications to the NARA jpg pages: diff? If I apply this change to all pages, can you then deduplicate while keeping the NARA page and the higher-resolution photograph? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:38, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
Sure, that would be great. As I can't process >100 files/day currently, you would not be in a hurry. --Túrelio (talk) 16:41, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Commons:Bots/Work requests

Hi,

I've left you a message at Commons:Bots/Work requests. – Ammarpad (talk) 08:18, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi. I'm not sure what response you're looking for. I marked the section as resolved as I responded to the user. You then removed my edit. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:18, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
It was re-opened, because the issue is not resolved. I am not sure what else you want in that case. What is needed is for you to explain how you got approval to perform the task per Commons:Bots, which says such approval is required. – Ammarpad (talk) 14:22, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
My bot is already approved to make semi-automated categorization changes. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:25, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
OK, please link to the approval. The the approval I can see is for "Categorizing images of the Pentagon.", which is clearly not the case here. – Ammarpad (talk) 14:45, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
You're nitpicking. I do a lot of categorization work and can't possibly file a request for every type of categorization I do. If you'd like, please file a formal complaint at COM:AN. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:47, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
How asking for an approval you claim to have is nitpicking?. You could have given the link with less words than you use to double-down now. I don't care whether you can file request or you can't, but you're not above the Commons' policies right? And moreover, basic ettiquete should tell you you shouldn't have interrrupted ongoing discussion as you did on that page. But you just came and pasted {{resolved}} with an air of finality and you're even surprised that I removed it. – Ammarpad (talk) 15:11, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry I jumped in on the request that you were already handling. Indeed this was poor judgement from my end. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:32, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

"License Review"

Your bot is not working properly 1. Hanooz 15:37, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. Indeed I need to make a small fix to account for video files. I'll clean up files with duplicate {{License review}} tags. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:39, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
I've removed the duplicate tags, fixed my script and restarted the bot. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:48, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. Hanooz 15:49, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

Creator templates

Good day! Are you sure this conversion of NASA photographers to the Creator template is a good thing? You're removing the NASA part of the attribution in the process. While of course this can be done to public domain photographs, it seems questionable to blatantly go against their requested method of attribution. Huntster (t @ c) 13:28, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

I don't have much of an opinion on this. If you think it's better, I can keep the NASA part of the author string, File:Commander Eileen Collins - GPN-2000-001177.jpg for an example. I can revisit the files I've modified to re-add NASA where appropriate. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:31, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
I would suggest that going forward the "NASA/<photographer>" text be left intact, and the Creator template be added in addition. It works out because the Creator template forces itself onto a new line anyway. This makes it easier for end users to copy/paste/use the requested attribution, while also providing the benefits of the Creator template. Huntster (t @ c) 15:43, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:44, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Example diff Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:51, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Is there any way for your script to detect if the author's name is already present, and if not add it? I.e. in your example, adding Robert Markowitz to "NASA/" since it wasn't there before. What I was referring to before was doing this. Huntster (t @ c) 15:57, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Certainly. Moving forward I can add both the name in plain text and the creator template. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:00, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

BadzilBot speedy tagging

Hi Cryptic-waveform. Could you please change the bot from using {{Speedy|Empty}} to tag empty categories to {{SD|C2}}? It makes it a little easier for admins to keep the deletion logs pretty. Best, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 17:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Sure thing. I wasn't aware of the more specific tag. Thank you for pointing it out. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:27, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

NASA-image as source

Hey there! I've noticed that BadzilBot is adding {{NASA-image}} as a source, and I would ask that you not do it that way. Use the direct URL to the NASA Images page. The NASA-image template should go below the Information template. The reason for this is that NASA could up and change their image archive structure at any time and render the template broken and potentially unfixable. This has happened in the past and we were picking up the pieces for a long time (and still are) because there was no correlation between the old links and the new ones. No forwarding or anything. With the direct URL, users could potentially still look up the source on Internet Archive. Hope this makes sense. Huntster (t @ c) 22:28, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Hey Huntster. In all cases that I can remember, I've added {{NASA-image}} to replace an already broken source. I'm not sure I agree with not using the template for the source, if the template has a non-broken link. In cases where it's not the case, I've occasionally added a secondary source. Please point out any cases where I may missed to do that. Cheers. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 00:47, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm primarily speaking of new uploads, though I'm not sure replacing old links with the template is necessarily the best thing either. Sometimes it's best to leave a dead link alone if it can't be one-to-one replaced, or perhaps add a second link to an archived version at the Internet Archive (like http://web.archive.org/web/*/<URL>). Perhaps simply adding the template and leaving the old link alone would suffice. There are many avenues, I'm simply warning against relying solely on the template (it was never intended for that purpose), when history has shown NASA is not the best at preservation, or keeping and using distinct and uniform IDs. NASA has a mountain of old media archives that have been lost; NIX, NASA Spaceflight, JSC Image Archive, KSC Media Archive, GRC Imagenet, the list goes on and on; and this usually happens when they get the bug to redesign their website to something "newer and better". I rather like ESA's shortURL scheme that (at least seems to) follow a resource regardless of page moves. Huntster (t @ c) 01:54, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
I share your frustration with NASA's inability to keep old links alive. The images.nasa.gov website is also a hot mess. I'm currently adding {{NASA-image}} to a number of files that do not have it, but only in cases where the link in the template actually works. I'll look into reviving old links next, whether it's through Wayback Machine, or fresh links from images.nasa.gov. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:51, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
FYI I'm starting with the most straightforward case I can think of: diff. I do verify that the new link works. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:09, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm continuing with mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov: Example diff. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:54, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I like that last one, since it preserves the old link. Note that http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov/detail.cfm?mediaid=45184 works too. Huntster (t @ c) 19:38, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm aware but have found that not all URLs were preserved. I could use {{Wayback}} such as http://mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov/detail.cfm?mediaid=45184 on the Wayback machine at the Wayback Machine. What do you think? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:42, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Exactly that. Wasn't aware that template existed. Good catch. Huntster (t @ c) 20:35, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Categories

Please provide categories for those images that you removed from a category, stating it was "overcat". Now they are not in any category, making more work for others. Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 22:31, 3 May 2023 (UTC).

Category:Port Said stadium massacre

You appear to have placed several photos in Category:Port Said stadium massacre that are in fact in Cairo, not in Port Said. I'm not sure exactly what your intent was. Rather than just remove that category, I'm asking you to have a look, and see if there was some other categorization you actually intended here. Thanks in advance. - Jmabel ! talk 21:46, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel. Thanks for checking with me before taking action. I did have a good reason for this categorization. The protests in Cairo on 4 February 2012 were a reaction to the Port Said stadium massacre. See Port Said Stadium riot ("Riots erupted in Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez. Police fired tear gas at protesters; thus, clashes erupted on the streets due to tear gas battles. Unrest calmed and ended on 13 February. ") as well as some descriptions of the pictures such as these pictures. I refined the categorization to make it clear that the images are not about the event itself, but in reaction to the event. Category:Images from the Florida Photographic Collection

I see that you're deleting this category. Why? Was this discussed anywhere? Andy Dingley (talk) 14:34, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi. This felt like a simple case of overcat to me. Every image in Category:PD Florida Photographic Collection was in Category:Images from the Florida Photographic Collection. The images left in Category:Images from the Florida Photographic Collection now do not have {{PD-FLGov}}. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:37, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
If this is an issue for you, I can recopy images into Category:Images from the Florida Photographic Collection. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:45, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
I don't understand why you chose to revert rather than continuing the discussion here? What is the purpose of the overcat that you reintroduced? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 20:25, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for completing that NRHP category

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Geralix

Bonjour,
Cordialement. "Art works" vs. Artworks

Hi, you just renamed category name from "artworks" to "art works". Unfortunately "art work" is an incorrect spelling of "artwork" [3], or refers to a type of labor [4]. Can you revert? Jarekt (talk) 14:31, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi. The parent category is named "Art works" and the majority of categories within this category are titled with "Art works by". This is why I renamed the category in question. If you wish to rename all categories "Art works" to "Artworks" it probably warrants discussion. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 20:19, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Check Category

I have gone through my Check Category list you created and await the cleanup of the correct ones so i can work on the remaining. Meanwhile, I have found the Category:Media needing category review by date and have found Category:Events in Kalamazoo Public Library has an enormous amount of "check Category" images. I have double checked to see if they are in the correct cat's and was wondering if there is a way to bulk delete the Check Cat the same as with the cat-a-lot program. It is taking forever to delete Check Cat as they are in the 100's?

Hi. I wouldn't recommend mass removing from the "Media needing category review" categories. Files and categories marked as such need human review and I don't think that we should be using automated systems to perform this action. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 20:20, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes I see your point but 10-13 year old photos have since been (most of them) put in correct categories and are just languishing there. I don't mind going through them tho. I went through my own that you put together and added and corrected many links. Thanks for the help. Photo Archives (talk) 17:14, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Cleanup categories

Hi Cryptic-waveform, I'm rather confused by your decision to empty Category:Files from Salem State Archives needing cleanup and remove larger numbers of files from Category:Causeway Street Elevated etc photos for cleanup by Pi.1415926535. These files require a large degree of cleanup including useful filenames, descriptions, multiple categories, correction of dates, and other curation. The large notice on the top of the category explicitly lays out what needs to be done before removing the files from the cleanup category. You appear to have added a single content category to each image without any other curation.

Additionally, the categories subtitled "for cleanup by Pi.1415926535" are specifically intended for my personal use. I use them for large uploads of GLAM files that will take me a while to properly curate, and that require an extra level of research when curating. The Boston Elevated Railway collection from the City of Boston Archives tends to be scant on description (and occasionally have location and date errors), so those files need to be individually examined to determine the exact subject, circumstances (many document certain construction projects or incidents), and so on. I don't want to gatekeep, but this requires both specific knowledge and access to certain print sources to do this properly. While you clearly have an above-average knowledge of the old elevated lines, you still made a number of categorization errors. Files that you added to Category:North Station (Charlestown Elevated) included separate stations in the same complex, files that should be in the construction subcategory, and a separate station a mile away.

I request that you add these photos back to the cleanup categories so that they are probably tagged for additional curation. If you are not able to individually check the files for categorization errors as I noted above, it would also be best for you to remove the content categories you added. Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:56, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for reaching out. Since you're unhappy with the level of cleanup I've done so far, I will add the pictures back to the cleanup categories. Since they will be back in there, I won't remove categories I've added so far since you will eventually go back and correct the few mistakes I may have made. The majority of the categorization work I've done still stands. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:04, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I've restored all pictures to both cleanup categories. I'll double-check the categorization based on the detailed feedback you gave. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:24, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for re-adding the cleanup categories. For reference, I have previously made the categories subtitled "for cleanup by Pi.1415926535" not be hidden categories so that the files are not automatically tagged as uncategorized. When the files have been tagged as uncategorized, users without specific knowledge of the system tend to add incorrect categories. This creates more work for me to cleanup without any benefit for users.
I appreciate you double-checking the categories. In the future, it's better not to add content categories if you're not 100% sure about them. It's more difficult for me to pick out the miscategorized files than it is for me to simply categorize them when I curate them. I understand that you'd like to have as many files as possible categorized, but these files won't be very useful to users until they're curated with detailed descriptions. It's a strange case where an archive has a large number of extremely specific files about extremely specific subjects - but relatively poor documentation.
Two questions about what you've been doing with BadzilBot:
  • When correcting the dates, would you be able to wrap them in {{Taken on}} so that the relevant date category is automatically added?
  • I'm unsure about the value of adding the link to the item on the City of Boston Archives website. Normally I'd be all for it, but the website has less information than the flickr page and doesn't actually show the image.
Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:29, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure I'm fully onboard with the philosophy of not starting work unless you can do 100% of the work. Oftentimes I will add images to “Category:Trains” or “Category:Aircraft”. I don't have knowledge about these fields but I see this beginning of categorization as a message to other contributors to take these files and add correct field-specific categorization. This has worked pretty well so far.
Also I don't think that you should hide uncategorized files so that only you will pick them up in the future. It doesn't really help collaboration. I started working on these files because they have been uncategorized for ~3 years and I knew that I could start the categorization work even if I couldn't do it completely.
As for your 2 questions regarding BadzilBot:
  • Yes, I can add {{Taken on}} automatically. As you may have seen I've already fixed the dates on all files in Category:Boston Elevated Railway photographs, 9800.018 except for File:-Everett- (16510497062).jpg for which I was unable to find a date.
  • You're right that the link to the City of Boston Archives website does not add any information. However the information it provides is more easily used by machines and it's a solid indicator that the file originally comes from the City of Boston Archives. Otherwise we can only rely on matching different text in file descriptions ("City of Boston Archives", "Boston City Archives", flickr ID number, etc.). I started adding the link above the Flickr URL for one file but then decided to add it underneath the URL for the reasons that you've mentioned.
Cheers. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:42, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I do understand your points about collaboration. Because of the specificity of the subjects, where they are nearly nonsensical without context, I look at these categories as akin to a draft on Wikipedia: a holding area for things not yet ready for public visibility. (Note that I only add files I upload to these me-specific cleanup categories - I'm not going to hide files than someone else uploads.) When the files had {{Uncategorized}} on them, other users were typically adding unhelpful categories like Category:Trains or Category:United States. While your edits today were helpful and added specific categories that I can improve on, most past attempts at categorization didn't get close enough to be a beneficial change. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:17, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Re edits like this: please do not add EXIF time to dates that I have manually added. I'm not always great at manually updating my camera after daylight savings time changes and moving between time zones, so the hour of the EXIF is not always correct. I attempt to correct it before uploading, but am not always able to. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:26, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
OK. I'll remove the times. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:28, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

I don't know the source, but may I assume that your {{Dw no source since}} should be removed from this pre-1917 work (which was not correctly dated by the uploader). - Jmabel ! talk 23:59, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Sounds good. I removed the banner. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 02:39, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Template:Published on for UN Treaty Series

Thanks for Special:Diff/740866291 to auto-translate File:UN Treaty Series - vol 818.pdf. Before requesting this kind of edits to other volumes, I wonder why the edit automatically categorized it as on 1976-11-02. Maybe Template:Published on has an issue if only a year is used.--Jusjih (talk) 04:30, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

Indeed. Switching to using {{Date context}} corrects this. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:32, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks again. Is there any fast way to change to {{Date context}} or to add something like Category:Volume 818 publications to other volumes of the UN Treaty Series? Manually changing them takes too long.--Jusjih (talk) 05:04, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure I understand what you want to do. Could you point me to a diff and I can see if I can automate the task with BadzilBot. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 05:06, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes. Please see if a bot may do these repetitive act:
  1. Use {{Date context}} like Special:Diff/819149732 from File:UN Treaty Series - vol 401.pdf on.
  2. Create Category:Volume 821 publications, Category:Volume 822 publications, etc. like Special:Diff/817686594.
  3. Add Category:Volume 821 publications, Category:Volume 822 publications, etc. to File:UN Treaty Series - vol 821.pdf, File:UN Treaty Series - vol 822.pdf, etc. like Special:Diff/817688066.--Jusjih (talk) 04:58, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. The first task is pretty easy and I'm doing it now. For tasks 2 and 3 I'm not sure I'm not sure I'm understanding the reasoning behind it. Will most (all) of the categories have a single file in them? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:14, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes. Most of the categories will have a single file in them. The reasoning behind tasks 2 and 3 is to keep in line with Volume 1 to 820 publications. If your bot cannot do either or both tasks, I will do them. Thanks again.--Jusjih (talk) 04:42, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

I'm not really onboard with creating dozens of categories containing only a single file, and probably never having another file added to them in the future. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:46, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Then please do the first task while noting that Volume 1242 and those published since 1995 have copyright notices. I will do tasks 2 and 3. Thanks so much for your answers.--Jusjih (talk) 02:27, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I replaced all instances of {{Published on}} and {{Published in}} I could find. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 12:46, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Date fix

Hi Cw, could you please fix the date of your recently uploaded files like File:Eaddy - English(...) - NARA - 108642302 (page 1888).jpg. Currently a lot of them are now in Category:Pages using Complex date template with incorrect parameter. Thanks, --Arnd 🇺🇦 (talk) 05:55, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi. Sure, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow. Sorry for the noise. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 05:58, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

No prob. Just saw it. Thanks, --Arnd 🇺🇦 (talk) 16:38, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Yep, just finished running the script to fix my mistake. Thank you for pointing it out. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:39, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

About file: TATAFRIK.png

Hello,

I would like you to remove the banner on my image (TATAFRIK.PNG); although I put a copyright on my site because it is my property, the image is not concerned in anything because it is me even that published it on my real identity in license for Wiki media commons and I do not take pleasure on the royalties and the images that you asked for double authentications were made by the owners of the images. Please, in future, verify file before pointing Videke (talk) 17:31, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Bonjour. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:38, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Champollion's Panthéon égyptien, pictures

Hello,

This file and many others from Champollion's Panthéon égyptien are not from raw-pixel, but from a book at Google.com. I extracted these pictures and reworked them with IrfanView. All pictures from raw-pixel have a pink background, while mine have a white background.

I ask you to remove the category you added on November 20, 2023 on all these files :

Contract photographer of The White House

@Cryptic-waveform,

Here: Commons:Deletion requests/Courtesy photos by Kevin Lowery

The photographer is mentioned by his name as a "contract photographer"- according to the exif data found at The White House flickr page for each individual photo's link.

I checked a few and they all state the same info about being a contract employee of the federal government.

Thanks, --Ooligan (talk) 23:54, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out. No need for a duplicate conversation, let's stick to the deletion request. Cheers. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 00:41, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Ok. --Ooligan (talk) 03:33, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Wondering about an edit of yours

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Future_Jefferson_Memorial_Site,_DC,_1908_(4264118831).jpg&diff=prev&oldid=821777991: it would seem to me that, while I understand the ontological issue you are trying to address, Category:Historical images of the Jefferson Memorial is a good category for an image of the site of the memorial shortly before it was built. With that category removed, no category ties this image in any way to the Jefferson Memorial, which seems much more wrong to me than a slightly imperfect category. Do you have a different way you would rather relate this image to the Jefferson Memorial? Because it certainly should be related. - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out. "Because it certainly should be related." I'm not sure about this. Do we want all images of the future site of a monument to be categorized under the monument category? It's going to be a lot of photographs which are only thinly connect to the monument. In this particular case I just added Category:West Potomac Park which encompasses the site of the Jefferson Memorial. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:40, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
"shortly before it was built" This picture is also from 1908, while the monument was built starting 1939. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 20:37, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
That's reasonable. Sorry I didn't see this till now (you didn't ping me when replying). - Jmabel ! talk 18:27, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Category:Seward_Park,_Seattle,_Washington

Seward Park, Seattle, Washington has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Question about your category removal.

Cryptic-waveform, why did you remove this category? [5] Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 16:53, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Probably because the file is sorted to Category:Joe Biden visit to Ireland, April 2023, which is already an indirect subcategory of Category:Relations of the Republic of Ireland and the United States, which is fine with me as is. Regards, --A.Savin 18:20, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, exactly what A.Savin said. Classic overcat case. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 02:09, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Category:Photographs by A.Savin/Moscow

Hello,

before creating this and making mass bot edits like this, have you ever asked me for advice? Did you ask at all if I wish such edits, such a user category? Thanks. --A.Savin 10:24, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Apologies. I got carried away. I can revert my changes and speedy delete the user category if you don't want it. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:15, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Comment It would be more helpful to run your bot for the Category:Photographs by A.Savin/Moscow and edit the files like this, this, and this, depending on which of the three user templates used. I've been planning such a run for a longer time, but didn't know which bot-owner better to ask, and nobody ever asked me for advice anyway... That means also, if you can't run the bot like this, then yes please, revert and delete the category. --A.Savin 16:02, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
This is something I can do. I'm not expecting to be able to get to this before Monday though. When I get to it, I'll do a small batch run, ask for you to double-check the changes, and run it on all the files. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:04, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes sure, thanks --A.Savin 16:08, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
I wrote the requirements as I understand them in User talk:Cryptic-waveform/A.Savin Moscow. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 01:03, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes. Note that in case 1, the parameter should remain the same, for example if User:A.Savin/F|L=4 (Personality Rights) then User:A.Savin/2023|L=4. For all cases, the License section should be placed before categories. The "Category:Moscow photographs taken on ..." should be placed straight after the camera/lens categories, if possible. --A.Savin 11:23, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

I ran my bot on the following files and had to adjust linebreaks:

Afterwards I adjusted my code and updated the following files which did not need manual modifications:

Can you check them and tell me if I need to make additional changes? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:22, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Looks OK, but please no linebreak between "User:A.Savin/2023" and "|L=...". Can you adjust it, and launch the bot for further 100 files? --A.Savin 10:59, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
I did an additional 33 files of each case. "savin" insource:/Category:Moscow photographs taken on / hastemplate:User:A.Savin/2023 Cryptic-waveform (talk) 12:35, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

OK all seems correct... --A.Savin 16:52, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Great. I just finish running the bot for all files in "Moscow photographs taken on". Let me know if you'd like to upgrade your other files. It'd be easy since the code is already written and tested. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:52, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
For several files, doubled categories were added, such as here [6], or [7] or many more. --A.Savin 21:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Good catch. I'll work on cleaning this up. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 22:12, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I've checked and that seems fine.
If that is fixed too, I would suggest next to adjust all files that are still using the User:A.Savin/Photo-RUFOP template (full transclusions list). These are not photographs of Moscow, so I doubt there are many local "taken on" categories, except for Saint Petersburg maybe, but this does not make sense for small towns etc. So I would suggest, use the "Russia photographs taken on...", wherever there are subcats they might be adjusted later at some point. --A.Savin 00:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Sorry to disturb, are you willing to continue? --A.Savin 12:09, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes! I'll prepare a small sample for review. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 12:45, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Please see:

Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:33, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Yes that looks quite good as is. Thanks, --A.Savin 21:33, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Great. I'll start the process. I'm going to be away for Thanksgiving weekend so I'll likely have to continue next week. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 21:37, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
This first part completed. Next week we could do the other 2 templates if you want. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 23:22, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, now I would like the files using A.Savin/Photo-DEFOP to be adjusted. Full list here, should be modified like this, note that "Country=Germany" has to be added too. --A.Savin 02:35, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Running now. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 05:31, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, looks fine. Next task is to take the Category:Photographs by A.Savin taken in 2006 and all files therein still using User:A.Savin/Photo template, and to modify like this, depending on country as noted. If that's successful, we can go step by step until 2015, so that the template is no longer used. --A.Savin 22:08, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Done. Let me know if things look good and I'll do 2007 to 2015. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:20, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

OK looks good. Suggest now launching it one step a day, maybe at night time (European) like 2 or 3 a.m. In parts, so that I'll have time and watchlist capacity to check:
2007 1/2, ~280
2007 2/2, ~280
2008 1/2, ~200
2008 2/2, ~200
2009 1/2, ~250
2009 2/2, ~250
2010 1/4, ~280
2010 2/4, ~280
2010 3/4, ~280
2010 4/4, ~280
2011 1/1, ~360
2012 1/2, ~320
2012 2/2, ~320
2013 1/3, ~300
2013 2/3, ~300
2013 3/3, ~300
2014 1/1, ~350
2015 1/1, ~350
Thanks. Regards --A.Savin 16:22, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Good. Please do 2010 in parts, because more than 1,000 at once are probably too much for watchlists. --A.Savin 16:23, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
Similarly we can continue from 2016 on. Correction like this, please no more than ~500 a day. Thanks --A.Savin 11:39, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Running now. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 00:18, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
