Summary

Description
English: Photo from the exhibition "The crafts of the Palace - Created over 200 years" at the The Queen Sonja Art Stable by the Royal Palace in Oslo, Norway:
  • Coronation robe (coronation cloak, royal mantle, queen's cape) made in Sweden in 1846, worn by Queen Maud of Norway during the royal coronation at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway on June 22, 1906. The ermine fur is made from about 1500 Siberian stoat hides. The red silk velvet is decorated with closed royal crowns, and on the left side of the garment, a star of the Order of St. Olav for the Grand Cross is sewn.
  • See article at www.sciencenorway.no: The queen's coronation robe was last worn by Maud during the coronation in 1906. The robeis nearly 4 metres long, made of velvet and fur from stoats. The black spots in the white fur are the ermine tails.
  • The museum's description:
Coronation robe; Ermine, velvet, silk and metal; 390 x 126 x 100 cm
This coronation robe was originally made for Queen Joséphine (Josephine of Leuchtenberg). Since she was never crowned in Norway, the robe was first worn by Queen Louise (Louise of the Netherlands) in 1860. The last person to wear the coronation robe was Queen Maud in 1906.
The coronation robe was made by the Swedish furrier Frans Willibald Hellbacker. It has ermine fur trimming along the front, around the entire collar and on the bottom. Ermine is the fur from the winter coat of the short-tailed weasel and the black spots in the fur are tails. Around 1,500 hides were used for this robe. The coronation robe is also made of red velvet and adorned with appliqued and embroidered closed crowns made of silver and gold-coloured metallic thread, with silk thread details in red and blue. Round pieces of metal are incorporated into the crown pattern.
