A couple issues with Image:Interstate Highways.svg

The following roads are shown but are not Interstates:

  • US 60 east from Phoenix, Arizona

The following Interstates are not shown:

That's just from a quick look; there may be others. Do you know if the USGS uses an azimuthal equidistant projection on its topographic maps (and if that projection allows for rotating one map to match up with a larger one)? If so, I should be able to help with the missing ones. --SPUI 23:30, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info! I'll see if I can find any of these in the data I used from nationalatlas.gov. Also, I can easily change the map projection if that helps. User:dbenbenn 23:43, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Update: My data does have w:New York State Highway 17, which is the same as 86 east; it just isn't labelled as 86 east in the data. So that will be easy to fix. Perhaps the others will turn out to be similar. User:dbenbenn 01:55, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear, here we go again...

Guess what: the Nuvola icons are now available in SVG! Compare SVG versionPNG version. They're in the GNOME Themes Extras package, available from [1]. User:dbenbenn 16:11, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know about the SVG versions of the Nuvola icon set. Well, I don't really have time to upload them again, but if anyone does, there are a few things that need doing:
  1. Remove the duplicates before the images get uploaded
  2. Remove any potentially trademarked images
  3. Go through and replace them (cf. checkusage tool, kicking around somewhere...)
Gargh. I've just been on vacation and look what happens when I get back... Alphax (talk) 12:22, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't this redirect to the most recent version, ie ? Just thought I would check if there is some special reason to RDR to , or if it is just historical. pfctdayelise 04:50, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nope. If someone releases their work under cc-by-1.0, you can't later change that to cc-by-2.5; only they can. I think the best thing to do would be to orphan cc-by (with a bot, replacing it with cc-by-1.0), then make it into a message about how there are different versions of the license, and you have to pick one. The same goes for Cc-by-sa and Cc-sa. User:dbenbenn 21:41, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to eavesdrop, but it seems like unless cc-by-2.5 is strictly more liberal than cc-by-1.0, that even the copyright holder cannot change the license (although they can add an additional license). Deco 07:00, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I meant. User:dbenbenn 18:13, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bigfoto

Hi, there is no problem with the Bigfoto pictures. There is a mail at permissions (at) wikimedia.org from the Bigfoto Team (Ticket#: 2006012710006851), which says they agree to the usage by there image under the same terms as the wikipedia = GFDl. --Ixitixel 12:49, 28 January 2006 (UTC) Please restore the Template.[reply]

I've restored Category:Bigfoto. Please mention the above at Template talk:Image-Bigfoto. User:dbenbenn 17:41, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thumbnailnote on Garmo Stave Church Winter (edited).JPG

Frankly I have no idea why you tagged this image like that, and according to the tag you should notify me, which you hasn't.

The image (Image:Garmo Stave Church Winter (edited).JPG) will not be uploaded under the old name as this will destroy the possibility to use the original for further copies. I will not upload a larger image as this is not of sufficient quality to justify a larger version. The original is linked on the image page and it is available. The license is not changed and the original source is attributed.

The edited image is now in use in articles at several wikipedias so pleace do not remove it.

John Erling Blad (jeb) 23:58, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tagged Image:Garmo Stave Church Winter (edited).JPG with Thumbnail because it is a thumbnail of the original image.
Your statement, "as this will destroy the possibility to use the original for further copies", is wrong. Since you are not an administrator here, nothing you can do can possibly delete images. The original will always be exactly where it is, unless an administrator deletes it. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 02:30, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nearly none of my previously uploaded images have alternate revisions, aka admins do remove revisions. I am not going to replace the original. An image with a height of 1600px can hardly be called a thumbnail, stil it is not an original it will never be of the same quality. — John Erling Blad (jeb) 13:58, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Could you provide a specific example to justify the claim "Nearly none of my previously uploaded images have alternate revisions, aka admins do remove revisions." I have checked some of your uploads, and haven't found any example where an old version has been deleted. User:dbenbenn 20:31, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Acccording to meta:Help:Variable#Subst_2 it should. Bawolff 01:27, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I see. With your edits to Template:Unknown, would put the date in. But simply using unknown was broken. User:dbenbenn 02:25, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, It shouldn't be like that. It should work for just normal transclusions. Bawolff 02:32, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've reverted Template:Unknown back to your version, for the sake of argument. Check out Image:Lilium michiganense 4.jpg. User:dbenbenn 02:37, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot flag

Hi villy. I'm planning to upload 3140 United States county locator maps in a couple days, as User:David Benbennick. If you want, it might be a good idea to set the bot flag for that account, so the uploads don't drown Special:Newimages. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 01:28, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For that amount of pictures, you probably should open a dbenbennbot account and ask for a bot permission on meta, using the appropriate boilerplate at the top of the meta page. Thank you! villy 07:14, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I made a request at m:Requests for bot status#Commons:User:David Benbennick. User:dbenbenn 08:08, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Delete request

Hi David, Would you mind deleting Image:Sonar data graph.png, Image:Typical sonar data graph.png, and Image:Typical.png? These have all been superceded by Image:Sonar plot.png. Sorry, I had a bit of trouble getting the colours and the image names right. Drew Devereux 02:46, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted Image:Typical sonar data graph.png and Image:Typical.png. Image:Sonar data graph.png is used at es:Sonar. Actually, what I think you should do is simply upload your new version, Image:Sonar plot.png, over Image:Sonar data graph.png. That way User:Snottygobble's version is still available in the history. Make sense? After all, when you want to modify an article, you don't first copy it to a different title ... User:dbenbenn 03:31, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK

Hi Equi. The Creative Commons Attribution license requires that you attribute the photographer. For example, at Image:Abbey Road sin Beatles.jpg, you didn't include the photographer's name in the page. Please go through your uploads and add that information. Also, when you upload a picture from Flickr, you need to upload the highest resolution available. For example, Image:HarryLego2.jpg is a thumbnail. Please re-upload any pictures where you didn't upload the full size version. Thanks, User:dbenbenn 07:01, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I will re upload the images... I don't know exactly when, but I'm sure I will :-)
One question: If I uploaded a photo from flickr, I would put: This photograph was taken by (name of user on Flickr)?
You told me something about the resolution, but I think the photographs aren't with a low resolution. They are in 768x1024 I think... it's a low resolution??
Thank you vey much for the advice. --Equi 05:09, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
:P:D:Sorry for my english, I'm from Argentina ;-)
Yes, the files aren't low resolution, but we want the highest resolution possible. Imagine you're printing a picture on a 600 dots-per-inch printer: 768x1024 would only be 1x2 inches! If you can't upload the large version because of bandwidth or something, you could just add Thumbnail to ask someone else to do it.
For attribution, it's probably best if you use a link for the photographer's name. For example, at Image:Desdelatorre.jpg, I put
Photo taken by Thumbling.
(You can write the attribution in Spanish, of course, instead of English!)
Also, if you want, you can use Template:Flickr. User:dbenbenn 06:14, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you're right. I put the image Image:HarryLego2.jpg in 768 x 1024 when I could put the picture in 1536 x 2048; Sorry ^_^ ...
Should I put the template Thumbnail and then replace the image, shouldn't I?
Thanks you very much your attention. --Equi 01:04, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Thumbnail is a way to ask someone else to upload the full size version. If you're going to do it yourself, there's no need to use the template. You can just upload the new version with the same name. (Near the bottom of the image page is a link that says "Upload a new version of this file".) County locator maps

Hi Bastique. I recently uploaded locator maps for all Florida counties, in Category:Florida county locator maps. I noticed there was one SVG map already, Image:Marion County Florida.svg, which you uploaded. What do you think of Image:Map of Florida highlighting Marion County.svg in comparison? User:dbenbenn 11:04, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Marion County...looks good except for one thing. Lake Okeechobee is missing!!! Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 13:03, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion; I'll add it soon and re-upload. I'll color it blue, as in Image:Map of Michigan highlighting Mecosta County.svg.
I specifically didn't add in all lakes, to keep the maps simple. Are there any other important lakes you think should be on the maps? Perhaps the Great Salt Lake. User:dbenbenn 13:10, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Only because you've got all those inland waterways. However, take a look at Image:Map_of_Florida_highlighting_Tallahassee.svg. You can probably copy the lake from it too... In fact, the lake is labeled as Lake Okeechobee.... Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 13:32, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Monobook.js

I fear that your change to the MediaWiki:Monobook.js has some bug as it broke the function of the script. (It doesn't show up at me). :-( Arnomane 12:32, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No I'm using w:Konqueror. See my discussion page. Arnomane 12:52, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I reverted my changes. Does the new version work for you? In a few hours I'll test the changes I was trying to make in Konqueror, and see if I can pin down what the problem was. But right now it's time for a nap. User:dbenbenn 12:58, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm strange. Still doesn't work for me after I restarted the browser, cleared the cache and so forth. So perhapes there is some caching lag of the Wikimedia servers (I had this yesterday as well with my version, Essjay needed to purge the server cache in order to make it function in short time). I'll be online again in about 3-4 hours and will join in IRC so that we can test and discuss this faster. Arnomane 13:17, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

David,
As you must certainly know, we programmers are an arrogant category of individuals. Before you find something that doesn't work on an oversight by another programmer, you had best be absolutely certain that what you are mentioning to the world at large is, in fact, the error in question. I'm a bit older than typical, and have had amicable dealings with you at the Commons, therefore I didn't eat your head for breakfast. But watch out!  :) Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 14:12, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Yes, I am aware. I don't take sides on these types of issues. I am only writing the bot because someone asked me too, and as long as it doesn't kill anyone, I'm not worried about the political part. I couldn't care less if people store their images on commons, locally, or in their shoes. Ah, and no thanks, I'll just register a different account.--Orgullomoore 10:33, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dbenbenn. You may be interested in this: Commons:Village pump/Policy proposal:No deletion of improved versions of images. pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:55, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have created an impersonation account on Wikinews. This behaviour is not tolerated on Wikinews, according to our n:Wikinews:Username policy. This account has been permanently blocked, and this may affect your, or others in the IP pool your ISP uses, ability to edit on Wikinews.

You may contact me via IRC, via e-mail, or on my talk page if you are able to edit to discuss this block and this behaviour. - Amgine | talk en.WN 04:38, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you understand I was acting in good faith. I saw a discussion about giving bot status to a non-existant account. I was afraid someone evil would register the name, so I registered it first, and then immediately offered it to Orgullo at User talk:Orgullomoore. Anyway, feel free to leave it blocked. I wasn't planning to use it anyway. User:dbenbenn 09:03, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ben! I've got a small one-minute-task for you: put in the logo-tag in the following image description pages: Image:Wikibooks-logo-en.png, Image:Wikispecies-logo.png, Image:Wikipedia-logo.png, Image:Wikinews-logo-en.png, Image:Wikinews-logo.png and Image:Wikiquote-logo-en.png. County maps and Alaska

Moin Dbenbenn, we used the county locator maps that you have uploaded, to create a new parameter-based template. Was very helpful ;-) Thanks. But I found no maps for Alaska boroughs and census areas. Are there no maps or was I searching the wrong place because of the different terms? --::Slomox:: >< 01:06, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really glad to hear you're using the county locator maps!
The problem with Alaska is that the state is so huge, MediaWiki can't render the SVG maps! I uploaded Image:Map of Alaska highlighting the Unorganized Borough.svg, then had to upload Image:Map of Alaska highlighting the Unorganized Borough.png.
I'm still trying to think of ways to make the SVG code small enough that MediaWiki can handle it.
In the mean time, I could upload PNG maps for Alaska. Can you make your template smart enough to deal with that inconsistency? User:dbenbenn 02:51, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TX for bugfix, & cry for Help

Hi David, nice you got things OK that quickly, this morning. It seems that my Adobe PS6 has troubles with PNG. PNGs with transparent parts become about three times bigger than GIFs (whith supposedly same amount of colours). As in German WP I am rather "mistreated" since I showed up there, I hardly get any answer on my questions, and if I do, most are just cynical (you can check e.g. de:Wikipedia Diskussion:Bildertutorial/1 and its history on this, as well as the tutorial itself, in case you are curious; I'm de:User:IP.).

What I want to ask you now: Which tool to use for PNG re-writing? In DE.WP, I just was "offered" pngout which has to be handled by command line, and I feel somewhat too tired and wiki-stressed to learn that now. So, in case you can give me a hint on DAU [sorry, don't have the English for it, it means "Most stupid Imaginable User"] - safe tool, which is freeware, too, it would be great. I for sure do not want to make you troubles with my PNGs too often! TX, WolfgangW. 10:45, 3 March 2006 (UTC) (Hmm, I probably do not explicitely have to say that my machine runs on WinXP?)[reply]

I use pngrewrite, advpng, and optipng. Sorry, they're all command line tools! If you want to give any of them a try, I recommend starting with pngrewrite. Anyway, they're all free. User:dbenbenn 12:39, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Finding same on my page, I've answered there. TX, EOD, WolfgangW. 14:47, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Policy?

  1. I thought, if I asked something here, I should expect your answer here. Having been alerted by your answer on „my“ page, I clicked the alert and re-answered. It is but now that I find time to check my "list" and see that you answer here, too. Is there, regarding answers, some different policy here than I'm used to in de:WP? and how to deal with it? - do I have to leave an additional note on the page where I do NOT re-answer? Sounds like redundancy(?).
  2. Would "EOD" seem unpolite in the way I used it above? To me, it just means that I do not have anything more to say on a given subject, therefore, to the other side, nothing to wait for, like eg. „OUT“ in radio communications. Is this automatically understood, or does it sound unpolite to you and other English speakers? TX, Best, and on THIS point I DO expect your answer, wherever ;) WolfgangW. 15:07, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I usually prefer to answer in both places. Since I answered here, anyone else who looks at this page can easily see what I've been saying lately. And since I copied my answer to your talk page, you got a "new messages" notice that I had replied.
I don't know any non-command line tools for dealing with PNG.
I don't think EOD seems impolite. But I'd bet most people won't have any idea what it means. I can guess it stands for "end of data", but only because of your explanation. User:dbenbenn 16:18, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
TX (would this be readable as "thanks"?). I thought I found "eod" for end-of-discussion, maybe end-of-data quite often on german forum pages. As, however, that does not seem to you to be THAT evident, I'll make up my mind on this. Tnanks, w. (going to have a break now) WolfgangW. 17:21, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Me again ;((

Hi David, would you please in favour of me and some nice German wikipedian care for Image:Schwingende Saiten.png, please? My yesterday's hype on PNGGaunt is gone, unfortunately, the tool (somehow mis-using pngrewrite, it seems) is not only s.l.o.o.o.w, but also tends to make the same kind of trouble against which I had had it installed: sometimes-invisible items! So, in case you find the time to correct that, the world might be happy about, as would I, btw.

I personally will do my best by having one more interview with my son, next weekend, but not before. Please, if you care about the picture and if it's not too much asked, it would be better to give the baby an English name, and at the same time leaving the „2. original“ (38k) for a possible Bug-Demo, one day. Would that be OK to you? tx, w. WolfgangW. 11:56, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with that image seems to be on Wikimedia's end. I've reported it at bugzilla:2888. User:dbenbenn 15:26, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He's tagging all these files claiming to be himself the owner of the work, with a combined license of use cc-by-sa and gfdl. In adding, all those images are also used on a webpage, http://www.telecable.es/personales/panizo/indices/portada.htm, where the autor of the web are claiming also the ownership of the designs about flags and COAs, and are all these copyrighted. Examples: Image:Flag of Ibi.gif with [2], or Image:Flag of Elche.gif with [3], etc... (See user's contribs). I've asked first him if he is being the same autor of this webpage. In the case he isn't the same person, how is it proceeded usually here in Commons? Obviously these files would be deleted, but what about the user?. --Joanot Martorell 19:41, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think lying about image sources is the worst sin a Commons user can commit. Anyway, there isn't any kind of formal process for dealing with problem users. I think you just discuss the issue with him. If he doesn't provide a good explanation, and he keeps uploading stolen images, then you can just block him. User:dbenbenn 16:00, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
David, I've decided finally to block him for two weeks. This user not only hasn't answered the question I've posed him, but also has blanked his talk page and he was been uploading stolen images again (Image:Flag of the province of Granada.gif). I hope I've decided it correctly because it's the first time I've have to block someone. --Joanot Martorell 18:34, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm? You blocked the same user for a week in February ... Anyway, I think it looks fine. User:dbenbenn 19:48, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If possible, protect Image:Example.jpg

In English, I can't do better - so, if you'd like to correct any "distorted" text, it would be nice. —WolfgangW. 11:18, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(from my page) I thaught I.did.stumble.over.a.talk where.YOU.seemed to declare that such would be allowed! But maybe I did not reda till the end. Never mind. I wrote yesterday "Change it into whatever, if you like, or have-to. I won't care. WolfgangW. 16:17, 7 March 2006 (UTC)". Supposing there might have been more than one reason to delete so soon, I created Image:Exemplum JPEGis.jpg today which for the moment needs no protection, as today I finally stumbled over language templates and I might like to play around with the picture whilst testing those. Best, _w., T.P.B 11:49, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Heya, I've noticed you moved the FPRC-pages to the Commons-namespace. I don't really oppose that move, but wouldn't it make sense to move Template:Featured pictures candidates as well for consistency? I created the FPRC-pages in the Template-namespace just because the FPC-pages were there, too, actually. --Conti| 21:14, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think that would make sense. User:dbenbenn 21:19, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Moving the hundreds of subpages won't be fun, tho. ;-) --Conti| 21:34, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's why I didn't move Template:Featured pictures candidates. User:dbenbenn 21:35, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The montly FP logs only go back about one year. Check the history of Template:Featured pictures candidates, list for FPC nominations from February 2005 and earlier. Here's an example of what FP promotions used to look like. Thanks, --MarkSweep 03:49, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please reinstate the OSCE logo - it has been uploaded with the permission of the OSCE Secretariat in Vienna. Evstafiev

Wolfgang, On editing "First Steps"

Hello, I start a dummie- or demoversion of "Beginners First Steps" on Commons:Erste Schritte which I discuss on Commons talk:First steps. Would you please have a look at it? I might need some protection for my idea, which seriously differs from acual First Steps by using several more little pages. As beeing in a flame war with (at least) one of the German admins, I'm afraid I might not be able to show my thing running before it would possibly be killed. TX, Wolfgang Annie IP 19:43, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know German. User:dbenbenn 19:45, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See no problem. If you pass by Commons talk:First steps, it's English. My question is: would I get the chance to show tha this is a better way to guide a beginner? I use 4 subpages in order not to mix up information on different topics within same page, you might see the difference without knowing German, I think. In case you're interested, I'd also translate the "Erste Schritte" into English. I mean, the English version is.not.good. for a beginner, as it is at the moment, and might with not so much expense be seriously improved by splitting up - but I repeat what I wrote on the talk page. Bye, Annie IP 20:35, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
@Annie IP: I have answered that specific question personally to you on my talk page in German where I also strongly advice that you do the same with the German text for the time beeing. Please read my reasons there why I won't split it up at this moment. And the First steps are still work in progress as you can easily see. I need to do some other related things first in order to finish the last chapter and in order to polish/copyedit the whole page. Arnomane 20:49, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BTW: "IP" alone is higly sufficiant, and w. does it as well. The human being behind any IP is, in this case, me, Wolfgang ;) ACK, I'll do so at once, but I really think that might be discussed on the English talk page, as I suggested above. oh, the translation for dbendbenn: User:Huitzlipochtli III./First Steps for Annie IP Annie IP 21:02, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Libyan Pics

Hi Jaw. Please make sure to provide attribution when you upload photos (the name of the person who took the photo). Most Creative Commons licenses require this information. See Image:Libyan Arabs.jpg for example. User:dbenbenn 22:05, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice. I've done as you've said. It has taken me a long time but finally there are decent numbers of Libya images. You should take a look at the Libya article in Wikipedia. Thanks again Jaw101ie 22:26, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That was quick! I've been checking out the world66.com site. It looks like a pretty good resource. I'm curious about Image:Germa museum .jpg, which you got from [4]. The version you uploaded here is larger, and doesn't have the watermark in the lower right corner. How did you do that? Is there some secret link I'm missing? Thanks, User:dbenbenn 22:36, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In response to your message, I am an Architecture student and am thus competant at using Adobe Photoshop. With Photoshop I removed the red writing and made the image larger. As far as I'm aware that's o.k. right? Jaw101ie 21:21, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's fine. User:dbenbenn 21:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do not blank the stock.xchng warning template.

Regarding, [5]. This is not simply a matter of commons policy. These images are clearly questionable, and in a large number of cases our tagging is clearly incorrect. We may go ahead and discuss policy, but if you blank this template again I will have you immediately desysoped and blocked from editing. We are legally and ethically obligated to discontinue misrepresenting the copyright status of these images. --Gmaxwell 00:00, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gmaxwell would you please stop your threats towards us Commons admins? Please read at first some analysis we did in Commons on that matter. Thank you for your understanding. Arnomane 13:55, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the support, Arnomane. User:dbenbenn 20:17, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Dbenbenn, as it happened I would have supported blocking the bot. I am impressed by your cool-headed approach, as ever. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:14, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Threats to block me

Hi Villy. Do you know if this edit is anything more than an empty threat? Also, perhaps you'd like to take a look at Template:Sxc-warning. Gmaxwell has apparently decided to change the Commons policy on Stock.xchng images. Thanks, User:dbenbenn 01:34, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

David, this is clear abuse. I've deleted . Nothing has changed since Commons:Stock.xchng images/vote and the policy is still Commons:Stock.xchng images. The threats are completely injustified and I have warned Gmaxwell that *he* will be banned from Commons next time he would feel like threatening instead of discusing. Any admin, including you, can block obnoxious people trying to harm the project. Regards. villy 14:14, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. User:dbenbenn 19:50, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hullbr3ach. Some of your uploads don't have any source information. Please say who took the photographs, or they will have to be deleted. Thanks, User:dbenbenn 21:45, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for indicating the missing copyright info on my uploads. Luckily I saw it on time. Maybe you could quickly check if everything is correct now. Thanks --Hullbr3ach 22:08, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That looks fine now, thanks! User:dbenbenn 22:19, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What was wrong with my archive?

Annie IP 22:31, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You moved your talk page into the "main namespace". You probably wanted to call it something like User:Huitzlipochtli III./whatever you want. User:dbenbenn 22:33, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that, which I did not realize.
Is there, btw, a kind of map wherefrom those spaces could be understood by Annie Beginner? If so, please give a link. or if it's at least some sitemap to commons comprehensive to non-informatics.
It's because I see that Arnomane (?) tries to talk about namespaces in "First steps" without being very clear/comprehensive, I'd say.
Your Q, I'm going to answer on my page, this afternoon. tx, —Annie IP 03:42, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems a shame to delete such work. Why don't we just move it to Suggested category scheme for playing cards or some such, out of the Commons namespace? pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:12, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it's a shame. A lot of work was spent on that, but it was all wasted. Anyway, feel free to remove the D if you like. But I think it should stay in the Commons namespace if it's kept at all. User:dbenbenn 08:37, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why the .ogg version is 100 times heaviest than the .mid version?

As I understand it, MIDI isn't actually a sound format. It just stores notes, and you need big data files on your computer to play those notes correctly. The OGG version, on the other hand, actually encodes a specific sound, without any extra data.
So MIDI is a better format for people who can play it, but the OGG should be easier to play. User:dbenbenn 11:31, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Filled pentagram star

Hi David! Just read the note on your user page and wanted to tell you that it's rather simple to draw an exact filled pentagram in SVG:

<g id="cone">
  <polyline id="triangle" points="0,0 0,1 .5,1" transform="translate(0,-1) rotate(18)"/>
  <use xlink:href="#triangle" transform="scale(-1,1)"/>
</g>
<use xlink:href="#cone" transform="rotate(72)"/>
<use xlink:href="#cone" transform="rotate(-72)"/>
<use xlink:href="#cone" transform="rotate(144)"/>
<use xlink:href="#cone" transform="rotate(-144)"/>

Well, this version has no practical meaning, the approximated version

<polygon points="0,-1
      0.587785252292473129168705954639072768597652,0.809016994374947424102293417182819058860155
      -0.951056516295153572116439333379382143405699,-0.309016994374947424102293417182819058860155
      0.951056516295153572116439333379382143405699,-0.309016994374947424102293417182819058860155
      -0.587785252292473129168705954639072768597652,0.809016994374947424102293417182819058860155" />

is sufficient for coding. But it's rather interesting from a mathematical point of view, isn't it? -- Regards, Pumbaa80 17:09, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome! That's pretty clever. I updated the flags of the United States, Turkey, and Texas. You don't have a fancy way to stroke an exact pentagram or pentagon, do you? User:dbenbenn 18:54, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you could compose it from single lines (Just keep pushing and rotating...) But that would result in strange-looking peaks :-( I'm pretty sure that there's no way to do it accurately since the path and polyline elements do not feature commands like "turn by x degrees"
Again for the filled star: My version cannot be filled with opacities other than 1 - for this purpose, you must first define a clipPath, and then put something like
<circle r="2" clip-path="url(#star)" fill-opacity=".5"/>
Do you have any idea why the use element does not seem to work when defining a clipPath? I tried
<defs>
<clipPath id="star">
  [text from above]
</clipPath>
<def>
but this just won't do... --Pumbaa80 20:52, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Weird
I was about to say I didn't have any trouble with it. I put your exact star in a clip path, then drew two circles clipped to the star. But when I uploaded it, I got something really bizarre. There are only 2 circles in the SVG image to the right!
Anyway, the Commons uses librsvg to render SVG, and it has plenty of bugs. Image:Petersen graph.svg used to look good, but a few weeks ago they upgraded to a new version of rsvg, and now it's broken. User:dbenbenn 00:21, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, the example on the right is really funny. I took the liberty of changing the radii to 1, so the circles fill out the mould entirely. Well, didn't really improve the picture...
And here is what it looks like in Inkscape: Image:Example_of_clipPath_with_xlink.jpg (Guess this is correct). Adobe's SVG viewer 6 doesn't display anything. On the other hand, I have images with clipPaths that Inkscape just won't show at all, even though they look good on Adobe's viewer. It seems there's not a single program that can handle clipPaths :-( --Pumbaa80 01:06, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here's the explanation: [6] If a 'use' element is a child of a 'clipPath' element, it must directly reference 'path', 'text' or basic shape elements. Indirect references are an error. --Pumbaa80 01:31, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's an annoying limitation. User:dbenbenn 01:33, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just couldn't stop thinking about the whole thing. You may want to have a look at these: Image:SVG_exact_five-armed_star.svg, Image:SVG_exact_pentagram.svg, Image:SVG_exact_pentagon.svg, Image:SVG_exact_pentagon_filled.svg, Image:SVG_exact_five-armed_star_filled.svg
Neat. I bet you can't do an exact pentagon with a given edge length, though (instead of a given radius). I sure can't see how. User:dbenbenn 15:51, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's even easier than the ones before: Image:SVG_exact_pentagon_with_given_edge_length.svg. But I can't find a way to center it at the origin (guess that's what you wanted) --Pumbaa 18:35, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BTW: I think the problem with the clipPaths might be that they have clockwise and counter-clockwise orientations at the same time, which results in some "evenodd clipping" --Pumbaa80 13:56, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It looks okay in the category, but I don't really like that the size was changed to do this, as this fill make it necessary to fix the size in the articles, instead of relying on the size here. If we change things later on this will cost us consistency.

Also there was a reason for the defs-section: it makes it more easy to manage the various defintions across images.

In short, this problem will have to be solved another way someday, but I guess there's nothing much we can do, except to wait for a new rsvg version. Shinobu 03:45, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note that it's not a good idea to rely on the pixel size of an image, because it's likely to change if anyone modifies the image. It's safer if you just explicitly say what size you want whenever you use the image, with . Also, it's important to make the image more than 300px wide in any case, so it works right with the "|thumb" syntax. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 15:01, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The whole translation thing is a great idea! Here's my contribution:

Attribution

If a file is Attribution 2.0 but not Share Alike, am I allowed to alter it and upload the new altered version onto Wikimedia? Jaw101ie 20:53, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, and you can for ShareAlike files too. You just have to give the name of the original author.
It's nice if you upload the original first, so that people can see what changes you did. But it's not required. User:dbenbenn 21:16, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, when you copy images from Flickr, please upload the largest version that's available. I just fixed Image:Tanzanian Animals.jpg and Image:Modern Manama.jpg. User:dbenbenn 21:21, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Traditional versus Simplified Chinese

Hello Dbenbenn,

Thanks for adding Hungarian and Chinese.

The texts you've added in the Mediawiki:.../zh files are written in traditional Chinese characters, therefore the title should be 正體中文 "traditional Chinese" not 简体中文 "simplified Chinese". Considering that A separate Traditional Wikipedia was closed down a year ago, and now the Chinese Wikipedia uses a conversion system. However, the majority of content is written originally in Simplified, with perhaps 10% in Traditional, probably half of which is pages relating to Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese interests. (written last year on zh:Wikipedia_talk:Guestbook_for_non-Chinese-speakers), shouldn't we provide simplified Chinese, instead of traditional, if we have to make a crucial choice ? Is there no way to provide both with Mediawiki:.../zh-hans and Mediawiki:.../zh-hant files ? Teofilo 06:48, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In fact there are five languages preferences here on Commons :

  • zh : Chinese (general)
  • zh-cn : Chinese (Mainland China)
  • zh-hk : Chinese (Hong Kong)
  • zh-hg : Chinese (Singapore)
  • zh-tw : Chinese (Taiwan)

The use of Simplified or Traditional characters in these countries is as follows :

  • zh : Chinese (general) ----------- Simplified (I have checked on other messages on Special:Allmessage)
  • zh-cn : Chinese (Mainland China)-- Simplified
  • zh-hk : Chinese (Hong Kong) ------ Traditional
  • zh-hg : Chinese (Singapore) ------ Simplified
  • zh-tw : Chinese (Taiwan) --------- Traditional

Okay, I think I have it straightened out now. I moved the Traditional Chinese to zh-hk, and put the Simplified in zh. User:dbenbenn 09:29, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
