| Description |
English: This is a Memorial monument that was placed next to Giluwe ecoTour Lodge and beside Mangani River in Mendi to celebrate the completion of this engineering structure(Mangani River Bridge), a girder bridge. This was a major engineering structure that was supervised and built by the 12 CE Engineers who were deployed to Mendi,SHP in the year 1970.
The RAE is an engineering corps of the Australian Army. Its (RAE) members were deployed as a unit of engineers to Mendi in 1970 to run the Provincial Works Division. They were previously based in Popondetta, Northern and had been in various parts of PNG since 1963. The unit moved to Mendi under the leadership of Officer Commanding, Major IM Wells. After completion of this Bridge it was befitting that a monument could be placed to remember the group of 12 CE Enginers and national employees of Department of Works who were involved in this Bridge construction. I was completed in 1989 and opened to the public. "LEST WE FORGET 12CE Engineers" of the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) team of the Australian Army left Mendi, Southern Highlands in 1999. This Monument is tribute to these Great men who served this country self-lessly. |
