Jean-Baptiste Guimet, dont l'épouse, artiste-peintre, utilisait du lapis-lazuli broyé, très coûteux, a inventé en 1826 un bleu outremer artificiel, dit bleu Guimet. Celui-ci est en particulier utilisé pour le blanchiment du linge, dit azurage. Émile Guimet, le fils de l'inventeur, profitera de l'invention de son père pour voyager en particulier en Orient. Le legs de sa collection d'objets d'art asiatiques constitue la création du Musée national des arts asiatiques –Musée Guimet. Jean Baptiste Guimet, whose wife, a painter, used expensive lapis lazuli, invented in 1826 an artificial ultramarine blue, called Guimet blue.
