Description
English: Easter Lily, (Lilium longiflorum) (n.) Japanese: テッポウユリ (Teppōyuri), is a plant endemic to Ryukyu Islands (Japan), eastern and northern Taiwan.  Lilium formosanum also known as the Formosa lily or Taiwanese lily, a closely related species from Taiwan, has been treated as a variety of Easter lily in the past. The pure white lily native to Okinawa in southern Kyushu can be said to be the most lily-like lily in Japan. It bears a number of trumpet-shaped, white, fragrant, and outward-facing flowers. It has become naturalized in scattered locations in Africa, Australia, and the Americas.
Alterntive names: Tagalog/Pilipino: liryo, Italian: Giglio pasquale, Thai: อีสเตอร์ลิลลี่ (Xīs̄ texr̒ lillī̀), Botanical name: Lilium longiflorum[1]; also known as Christmas lily, Trumpet lily, Popular cultivars: White Heaven, Pink Heaven, White American. Other related species: Madonna lily ( Lilium candidum) native to the Balkan Peninsula and West Asia, and its flowers are white but short, similar to the Easter lily , and its leaves are thin. The stem grows up to 1.2-2 m. It is also the national flower of the Vatican. Sasayuri (Lilium japonicum) an endemic species that grows naturally from Kinki[2] to Kyushu, and the flowering season is from June to July. The flowers are pink and have a unique scent. It is not generally used for horticulture because it is difficult to cultivate, but its distribution is narrowed due to overfishing.

According to the divine legend, after Jesus' death and resurrection, some of these beautiful flowers were found growing in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus went to pray the night before His crucifixion. Legend has it that these flowers shone where drops of Jesus's sweat fell as he was praying. In many Christian churches, the chancel is decorated with Easter lilies throughout the Paschal season.
