Summary

[edit]
Description

In St. George's Cathedral, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Cathedral was built by Emperor Menelik II to commemorate his victory over the Italian army at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. The Cathedral was completed in 1911.

Emperor Zewditu was crowned here in 1916; Emperor Haile Selassie in 1930.

It is ironic that a building commemorating victory over Italian imperialists looks very much like what the Italians would have built in Addis had they conquered Ethiopia at the end of the 19th century.
