Italiano: Irsina è un comune italiano della provincia di Matera in Basilicata.
È uno dei paesi più antichi della Basilicata, come testimoniano numerosi reperti archeologici risalenti ai periodi greco e romano. Dal Medioevo fino al 6 febbraio 1895 il nome del paese era Montepeloso. Per quanto riguarda l'etimologia, sembra che il nome Montepeloso derivi dal greco plusos, che vuol dire terra fertile e ricca, modificato in pilosum dai latini. Il nome attuale sembra derivare dal latino Irtium. Fu assediata ed invasa nell'895 dai Saraceni, che nel 988 la distrussero. Fu ricostruita dal Principe Giovanni II di Salerno e fu contesa tra i Bizantini ed i Normanni. Irsina è uno dei Borghi più Belli d’Italia in virtù della bellezza del suo centro storico e della progettualità messa in campo per valorizzare al meglio le sue bellezze storiche e architettoniche. |
