Title |
Medieval curtain ring |
||
Description |
English: Small copper-alloy ring with integral hook. The ring is 12.7mm in external diameter, 7.3mm in internal diameter, and 2.9mm thick; the hook extends the length to 20.3mm; it weighs 2.24 grams. The object is relatively flat, with an oval cross-section and filemarks on both faces. The hook tapers a little but has a blunt end. The hook is in the same plain as the ring so would hook through something running parallel to the bar or wire the ring was on..
Similar objects have been recovered from late 13th- to mid 15th-century contexts in London (Egan 1998, nos. 131-8), and are tentatively interpreted as curtain rings. As well as curtains over windows fabric hangings were widely used in this period over doors and walls. |
