Summary
[edit]DescriptionNational Museum of Korea 국립중앙박물관 (5452976818).jpg |
This flag of South Korea was sent to the moon aboard Apollo XI in July 1969. It was presented back to South Korea, and President/Military Dictator Park Chung-hee, with four small pieces of moon rock, by US President Richard Nixon. Park's family donated the display to the National Museum in 1984. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of modern-day South Korea, the museum was holding a special exhibit on the history of taegeukgi, which symbolized the Korean nationalist and independence movements before becoming South Korea's official national flag in 1948. The basic design always had the yin-yang in the center and the four Taoist trigrams around it, but the geometric layout was not standardized until 1949, and the exact shades of red and blue not standardized until 1997. |
