P-Morgan, Blinky
Description
Pictured is notorious criminal Blinky Morgan. On January 26, 1887, a gang led by 'Blinky Morgan' (Charles Conklin) stole a large number of furs from downtown Cleveland's Benedict and Ruedy store. One of the four members of the gang was captured, and when two police officers went to retrieve him from Pennsylvania, both were ambushed and beaten, with one beaten to death, and all the gang members escaping. Eventually, another police officer infiltrated the gang and discovered its headquarters in Alpena, Michigan. On June 28, 1887, Morgan and two other gang members were captured. During the capture, the local sheriff was shot and died from his wounds. The three gang members went to trial in Ravenna. Morgan was found guilty and hanged in summer-1887. The two other gang members were found guilty, but later freed following a new trial. A fourth gang member was never captured, and the stolen goods were never recovered, according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.
