This type of pylon is the most common in Belgium. The small traverse on top carries two thin cables: ground wires bolted uninsulated directly onto the pylon. The conductors are hanging on the traverses by means of insulator chains made of separate glass dishes. Their length depends on the voltage. For 380 kV more than 20 dishes are being used. The conductors consist of two separate wires (bundle conductors). Because the power plants generate 3-phase alternating current, the number of conductors on a high-voltage pylon is always 3 or a multiple of 3. The 380 kV powerline Mercator–Horta is an overhead connection from 1974. The line spans 49 km in the Oost-Vlaanderen province from substation Mercator in Kruibeke to high-voltage substation Horta in Zomergem. Notice the balls on the right ground wire. These serve as a beacon and radar reflector for aviation and shipping. Aan de rechter bliksemdraad zien we enkele bollen hangen. Deze dienen als baken en radarreflector voor lucht- en scheepvaart. De bewering dat de bollen er zitten om vogels te waarschuwen is een fabel, maar op sommige vogeltrekroutes worden daarvoor wel speciale vogelweringsspiralen aan de bliksemdraden gehangen om de zichtbaarheid te verhogen. De dubbelvlagmasten komen in België het meest voor. Aan de kleine traverse boven op de mast zijn twee dunne kabels ongeïsoleerd op de mast vastgeschroefd. Dit zijn bliksemafleiders. Daaronder hangen aan de drie traversen de geleiders aan isolatorkettingen. Die bestaan uit losse schotels van porselein of glas. De lengte van deze kettingen hangt af van de spanning. Voor 380 kV worden er meer dan 20 gebruikt. De geleiders bestaan uit twee afzonderlijke draden. Omdat de centrales 3-fasige stroom opwekken, is het aantal geleiders aan een hoogspanningsmast altijd 3 of een veelvoud van 3. De 380 kV lijn Mercator–Horta is een bovengrondse hoogspanningsverbinding uit 1974. De lijn ligt volledig in de provincie Oost-Vlaanderen en loopt van Kruibeke (hoogspanningsstation Mercator) naar de gemeente Zomergem (station Horta) over een afstand van 49 km. |
