r calls to each other. He visited the haunts of wild animals, moun-tain sheep and elks, bears and deer, and asinging gopher, as he called it, because itssad chirrups sounded like bird notes. Among other sights interesting to him werethe famous boiling springs, and the StygianCaves filled with such poisonous air that theground around was strewn with the feathersof birds which had breathed the air insideand instantly died. Many wonders Mr. Burroughs lookedupon, enjoying what he saw. And many de-lightful talks he had with his friend, PresidentRoosevelt. Mr. Burroughs built a rustic porch on thelodge and himself made the furniture usedinside, choosing bark-covered wood for mostof it. For his study he chose a corner of anold barn which stood on the hill behind thehouse. As for the desk he set up there, youcould never guess what he used. It was anold chicken coop, one side of which wascovered with boards. Over its top and sideshe stretched heavy, brown paper. No doubt, when he had finished his work,he looked at it with twinkling eyes and saidto himself, Aha I at this rough, homemadedesk I will spend many
