Español: La estación de Madrid Atocha es la mayor estación de ferrocarriles de Madrid y de España. Actualmente, está dividida en dos estaciones: Estación de Madrid Puerta de Atocha y Estación de Madrid Atocha Cercanías, además de una estación del Metro de Madrid.
La estación de Madrid Atocha fué construida en el siglo XIX e inaugurada el 9 de febrero de 1851, por la empresa ferroviaria MZA o Compañía del Ferrocarril de Madrid a Zaragoza y Alicante, con el nombre de Estación de Mediodía y conocida, también, como Estacíon del Sur o Embarcadero de Atocha. Fué la primera estación de ferrocarril de Madrid y era la cabecera de la línea Madrid - Aranjuez. El mismo día de la inauguración se realizó un viaje hasta Aranjuez con la Reina Isabel II de pasajera. En 1864, un incendio la destruyó. En 1888 comenzó la construcción de una nueva terminal, una nave de 154 metros de largo, 48,76 metros de luz y 27 metros de altura, bajo la dirección de Alberto de Palacio Elissagne. Las obras duraron cuatro años y la nueva estación se inauguró el 8 de diciembre de 1892. Entre 1985 y 1992 la estación fue ampliada y reformada, con motivo de la construcción del AVE Madrid - Sevilla, y es obra del arquitecto Rafael Moneo. La cubierta de hierro de la antigua estación, ya sin andenes, fue convertido en un espacio comercial con tiendas, bares, una discoteca y un jardín tropical cubierto. |
