Hello, IdLoveOne~commonswiki!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello

[edit]

This is just to let you know in person that the post you made about me on FPC talk is not acceptable. Your allegation of hypocrisy is unsubstantiated and has the quality of a smear. You offer no backing and just make a diffuse comment about the 1000px minimum size requirement discussion on en.wp. This rings with the implication that I am a hypocrite especially in regard to that matter. By hypocrite I understand a person that holds other people to a different standard than himself. I always upload the highest possible resolution of my images to commons, and do not withhold them for commercial purposes as some other actors in that debate do. So I fail to see the hypocrisy there. Please consider this especially in light of the fact that I am editing under my real name, while you can hide behind a pseudonym. Furthermore your allegations about admins punishing dissenting users painting commons as a totalitarian regime are distasteful and an offense to the many people who donate their hard work to the project. Not cool! --Dschwen (talk) 01:13, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for supporting my featured picture candidate Pieris rapae .JPG I'm accustomed to close-shooting and close-cropping my arthropod images, as they are used in scientific publications primarily, and not as "artwork" per se. More dead air to the top would reduce the size of the useful image. Was your suggestion prompted by past experience? Bruce Marlin (talk) 14:56, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes. Commons has a lot of animal lovers and most of them hate tight crops. Alvegaspar's "let the poor thing breath" is practically his tagline. I've seen many good nominations go down due to the crop being 'too tight,' although I agree with you personally about unnecessary space in an image, and Commons's scrutiny of insect images can be very severe. --IdLoveOne (talk) 21:06, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info. I'm a bit surprised many here do not understand this image is used in a taxobox; the purpose of a taxobox image is to show as many of the features of the organism in as clear a manner as possible. It's a picture of the butterfly, the subject of the article, not a picture of the flowers or a picture of the backyard the flowers are in. I'm a well-known professional photographer, and this is just another reason for me to avoid donating to Wikimedia Commons.Bruce Marlin (talk) 01:46, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unidentified yellow circle in QIC

[edit]

Hi IdLoveOne
First I would like to congratulate you for all your very interesting reviews an comments, and thank you very much for many supports on my own pictures.
About your question in QIC, you make me a great compliment when you tell it is hard to say what it is really ! It was the purpose of this photograph: make the reviewer asking this question: what is it ?
It is not a NASA picture of a very far star. It is only a glass lamp, as a lantern, a light fittment, as you can see above. I found the light interesting, and I wanted to see how could my camera react in this difficult condition.
Yes I blacked out the background, because it was uninteresting, badly dark, really ugly, and very noisy.
I didn't want any distraction on the main subject, which was this yellow-orange shade.
And I thought it was funny to nominate it in QICjust near the "mexican sun".
Anyway, many thanks again, and please enjoy a friendly "cheers" from Paris.--Jebulon (talk) 16:53, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

French marigold

[edit]

Hi IdLoveOne; On File:French marigold with raindrops.jpg, I assume you used an automatic white balance feature in an image processing application. Such software can only guess what gray should be, but in scenes with clouds, concrete, snow, etc., the result is often good. In this example, with its strongly colored subject, and no gray, the result is unlikely to be accurate. Sometimes you can do better if you can find something in the image, e.g., concrete, that is likely to be gray and manually identify it to the software. The levels tool in Photoshop has this capability, for example. If you want to be compulsive, you can photograph a calibration target every few frames, e.g., File:Color_target-A8R1_br.jpg.[1]

Please consider putting babelboxes on your userpage. They may help others communicate with you. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 01:05, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose I should put a babel and some info on my userpage. Yeah, for images like the marigold where the colors are very different due to the weather I'll often run it through white balance to hopefully get a look at what things look like under clearer conditions, but I wouldn't expect it to change a plant from green to blue. The shade but not the color. Still you're probably right because I've seen GIMP make mistakes. -- IdLoveOne (talk) 05:18, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
BTW the zorn painting I used different languages of recent users just to sort of pander to them, er, make it easier for them to know what the image is lol. -- IdLoveOne (talk) 08:05, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, File:WhiteBalanceFAIL.jpg is a good example of a problem with automatic white balance. Blue is opposite yellow on the color wheel. White balance may have assumed that the yellow of the flower was excessive and added blue to compensate. Your image notes are welcoming. It is kind of you to wish Anders Zorn a happy birthday, too. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 18:55, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and that panorama with all its issues is why I'm usually wary of panoramic images in FPC and QI. But what should be done about white balance and how do we determine the likelihood that it'll be wrong? -- IdLoveOne (talk) 17:39, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The white balance looks fine to me. With no calibration card in the frame, there is no objective way to decide. Like most everything on FPC and QI, the reviewers decide, in the end. I don't have an opinion on the panorama. Walter Siegmund (talk) 05:05, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
