Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hi, if this is your website, could you put a cc-by notice on the website? Otherwise, we can't establish that you are indeed the owner of this website and it's not a copyright violation. Thanks. Patstuart 18:30, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm the owner of the website. But why do I need to label a cc-by notice on my website? I already label the pictures here as my own work and select the right GDFL label for the pictures in the commons. --Kuebi 18:54, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Because we get a lot of people claiming to own a photograph that's not theirs. ;) Not that we don't believe you, but we need to go through with the procedure; it's important to establish coypright. Please see Template:Image permission for alternate methods of confirmation. Patstuart 19:05, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can already find my name at the homepage of this website http://www.best4sports.de/ which is the same name as I add it to the Author field in my uploaded images. Should I add a notice on this site like: Some of these pictures are also uploaded and published at http://commons.wikimedia.org. I confirm to be the author.--Kuebi 19:16, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would work. Some of these pictures I have also uploaded and published at http://commons.wikimedia.org. I confirm to be the author.. Patstuart 21:13, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
O.k., I've added your text proposal to the website. Best regards --Kuebi 07:40, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photo der Churburg

[edit]

Hallo Kuebi,

[edit]

You took image that I uploaded into en.Wiki, changed it licence and uploaded it under new name into commons claiming that you are copyright holder of the image. If you are truly copyright holder, that is not a problem and totally cool. But how come then you are not mentioned on "Authors" and not credited in original article that was a source for original upload? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:NudeMouse.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:NudeMouse.JPG TestPilot (talk) 15:28, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please read carefully the image´s description [1]: I'm not the author. The real authors are listed, as well as the source of the image. The image is published under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 which is the same license as the original publication. --Kuebi (talk) 15:53, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The description say "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it". So you claiming that you are the "copyright holder". If you don't owe copyright for that image - then statement should be removed. Second, what was the reason you have changed PLoS ONE licence from "Creative Commons Attribution 2.5" into "Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0"? You can clearly see licence using doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0000093 and even in pubmedcentral copy they say nothing about ShareAlike. Why you claim that image under SA, and therefore could be freely modified/derivative works allowed? TestPilot (talk) 14:16, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
When I have to select the license type, I can just select Creative Commons CC-BY-SA-3.0 as the closest license to Creative Commons Attribution 2.5, which I can not select. And why does this strange Wikimedia system replace the selected license with a text I, the copyright holder of this work, which I've not selected? How can I upload a file in a way where I could select Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 without the wrong text replacement?
Meanwhile I found the solution with manual editing to the right license. I just did it for this file. --Kuebi (talk) 16:34, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To remove copyright claim you need to remove self| from {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}}. Furthermore, since PLoS license do not allow any image modifications, it should be {{cc-by-2.5}} instead of {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}. I have corrected that. Anyway, other images of nude mouse you have uploaded are way better than this one - and thank you for that. My point was more like we should be careful when citing license information - it could be very misleading and harmful to guys out there who want to reuse images. TestPilot (talk) 17:38, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your corrections. Any you are right, the newer pictures I made by myself, are better than this one. Also the mouse was alive... . Best regards --Kuebi (talk) 17:54, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kuebi!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 06:07, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello! I've uploaded the image:

You seem to have cropped one picture from that earlier:

If yes, there are two little mistakes: the brain is not embryonic but postnatal (P1) and you seem to have retouched out the EGAD sign meaning that the marker is not for "full" GAD67 but for GAD25\GAD44 (embryonic forms). Best regards, --CopperKettle (talk) 09:27, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kuebi

I'm a radiologist specializing in MRI. I wanted to let you know that the MRI image for Graves opthalmopathy is incorrect: The source of the image, paper by Huy A Tran and Glenn EM Reeves, is incorrect. The arrows are pointing to intraorbital fat. The muscles are the thin gray structures along the lateral aspects of the fat. In this case the muscles are normal in thickness. If you look at other articles, the mistake will be obvious. The authors used an incorrect image. Best Regards

Thank you for this information. I will check and correct it, if I find the time. Best regards --Kuebi (talk) 15:58, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dein Panorama vom Aletschgletscher

[edit]

--Speravir (Talk) 19:15, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Mole Setup PMID23385586 01.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

What's the problem with this sketch? I made it by my own with Inkscape. The original publication is (Open Access, CC BY-NC-SA 3.0), but the sketch itself has no creativeness. --Kuebi (talk) 14

The mole drawing is clearly eligible for copyright protection. If it's your own work and you want it to be in the public domain, you need to explicitly waive your rights (e.g. using {{cc-zero}}). LX (talk, contribs) 14:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
O.k. I did it. --Kuebi (talk) 15:06, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Splendid! I removed the problem tag. Cheers, LX (talk, contribs) 15:57, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Permission to use picture of solar panel -- need signed release for publisher

[edit]

Hi Armin,

I'm working on a book for school teachers due out this fall about teaching engineering and design from a Nature-based perspective. I'm writing because I'm hoping to use an image of yours in the book, with due credit of course (from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Polymer_organische_Solarzelle_01.jpg). Your image would appear in a chapter about teaching sustainability.

Even though you kindly made your image available to others through Creative Commons, my publisher still requires a signed release form for any images I use in the book.

I hope you will contact me so I can answer any of your questions, and attach the release. My email address is samstier@gmail.com (samstier at gmail dot com)

Many thanks for considering my request!

Sam

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
